Banks Are Not Lending? So What

Much has been made about the fact that economy-wide bank lending is down considerably despite the fact that the stock market and other economic indicators have begun to improve. Even after the unprecedented cash made available by the Federal Reserve and direct bailouts from the Federal government, some estimates state that bank lending is still down some $600 billion from this time a year ago. This has created widespread frustrations which became apparent in an interview with real estate mogul Donald Trump this morning on CNBC. In that interview, Trump argued that the economy cannot heal until we have a fully functioning credit market and even suggested that perhaps the government should force banks to lend more.[More...]

Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.[More...]

With the financial landscape shifting under recent news, especially the quasi-nationalization of Freddie Mac and Fannie May, I believe that it is time to speculate on selected regional banks for both dividend and total return over the next few quarters and beyond. Recently, I posted the Top 10 and Bottom 10 Stocks in the S&P 500 average by daily Average True Range. Now, let’s look at the top and bottom stocks by factor of percentage of the ATR to the recent close - stocks with a higher percentage will be more volatile than those with lower percentages, and absolute ATR dollar value says little in terms of ranking stocks. First Tennessee Bank is setting its eye on Five Points intersection

Nov. 24--First Tennessee Bank is trying to raise its profile in Winston-Salem by moving its branch to the Five Points intersection.
First Community, based in Bluefield, Va., has moved its N.C. headquarters to a former TriStone Community Bank branch at Jonestown Road as part of its purchase of TriStone earlier this year.
It has about $9.5 million in deposits in Forsyth County, which places it 17th out of the 20 banks that have a branch presence here, according to the latest data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
