I have not had a chance to do a write up on Flowserve's (FLS) earnings yet, but Fluor (FLR) in engineering / construction and Flowserve in water services are 2 dominant machines. (Feb 26, 2009: Fluor and Flowserve Continue Best of Breed Ways) Fluor is trading at 14x this year's estimate but at this point 2010 is looking to be less profitable than 2009; we shall see how it plays out. Fluor reported last night - a slight beat on the bottom line and inline on the top line. Inline on guidance - as always the key with these E&C names is backlog; things seem to be holding up well there too. New project awards for the quarter amounted to $6.8 billion, compared to $6.4 billion last year.[More...]

Fluor Corp. (FLR) reported earnings after the closing bell on Monday, and we believe the global engineering and construction company continues to offer compelling value. Estimates called for earnings per share of 91 cents, which would have been an increase over the same period a year ago where FLR made 87 cents. Although the industrial sector had a rough year in 2008, there were some sectors, like conglomerates, rails, and aerospace and defense sub-sectors, that were able to help boost some of the lagging sub-sectors that relied heavily on residential construction and business spending. The net effect was an out performance in the first three quarters of the year. (7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. NRG Applies to Build Post-Combustion CO2 Capture Demo

NRG Energy has submitted a Clean Coal Power Initiative application to the US Department of Energy to build a post- combustion carbon capture demonstration unit at the Company's WA Parish plant in southwest Houston, Texas.
The project will use Fluor Corporation's Econamine FG Plus technology to process flue gas from the plant equal in quantity to that of a 60 MW unit.
The demonstration plant will be designed to capture 90 per cent of incoming CO2, or just under 500 000 tons.
