Best Performing Stock of 2008

I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. With that said, I am always curious to see what stocks held up over the long run... folks, no matter what happens (short of 8%+ rally here in the next 3 days) we are projecting the worst year in the markets at least since the[More...]

Oversold, But Be Ready For More

Looking at index charts, I am not sure whether the term "oversold" has much meaning in relation to our current market. Sure, we may get an oversold bounce, perhaps if we get an emergency rate cut. But lower interest rates will do nothing to solve the underlying problem. Moreover, the market may have already priced in the bailout. We are in a steep decline, and panic has yet to truly manifest itself. Considering the underlying fundamentals, the market is almost certainly overvalued here. We are losing large corporations and wealth at a rapid rate, unemployment is increasing, tent cities are springing up around the country, the taxpayer is under an enormous burden of government debt, and earnings season is on the way. Yet, many homebuilder, airline, and consumer sector stocks are well off of their yearly lows, presumably because lower oil prices[More...]

Post-Bailout Shorting Opportunities

The stock market is likely to get a temporary lift from the bailout. However, with earnings season on the way, expect some dismal forward guidance. Remember that stock prices reflect perceptions about future earnings. The S&P is only 20% off its highs, and many consumer related sectors are well above their lows for this year. Also, short selling restrictions only work for so long, and eventually the market reflects actual value. I have been telling friends and family to make sure assets are protected and hedged against inflation. I am gradually accumulating gold (via GLD and DGP) and Swiss francs (via FXF). As we enter what promises to be an eventful week, I will be lightly invested and watching the post-bailout action, with an eye toward shorting strength in damaged sectors.Airlines look like they are ready to give up much of their big move since July. There is no question businesses and individuals will be tightening their belts.[More...]
