Grant for Swanton sewer plant to benefit residents

Dec. 2--SWANTON -- A state "stimulus" grant awarded to Swanton recently will save every village sewer-system customer roughly $5.55 per month off their bill over 20 years.
The $1,035,000 grant toward the $2.2 million modernization of the village's sewage treatment plant was the second largest of five grants, totaling more than $10 million, announced for Swanton during the month, and means the village will have to borrow that much less to pay for the project.
"The stimulus funds for the sewer plant upgrade will save village residents approximately $2 million in debt service costs over the next 20 years," village administrator Jon Gochenour said.

Dec. 1--If the British public were polled and asked whether they thought an American company should be allowed to take over Cadbury, they would be most likely to vote against.
If customers were asked whether they would prefer an independent Cadbury to one that is part of a US food conglomerate like Kraft, they would probably vote for its continuing independence.
A politician, asked if it was right that Hershey, a possible rival bidder which is smaller than Cadbury, should be allowed to bid for it when Cadbury would be blocked by its controlling charitable trust if it tried to take over Hershey, would mumble about the need for reciprocity while sitting firmly on the fence.

Shoppers prepare for the craziness of Black Friday

Nov. 26--When Thanksgiving dinner is complete and the dishes are put away, the women in Lori Gardner's family are ready for one more intensive planning session.
While the male members of the family may roll their eyes about the craziness that comes next, Gardner said it's a family tradition for the women to retire to a different part of the house to discuss the next big event: Black Friday, the shopping day where people are willing to get up in the dead of night in the hopes of finding major deals.
"We view (Black Friday) like others view the opening day of fishing season," said Gardner with a laugh.

Luxury pillows take sting out of unemployment

If it weren't for the crummy state of the economy, we wouldn't have Becky Fixel's fabulous pillows.
A recent graduate of Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich., with a master's degree in interior design, Fixel has not been able to find a job.

LP shortage threatens lagging harvest

Nov. 24--FAIRBANK -- A liquid propane shortage could bring an already late harvest to a screeching halt.
Others have already waited days for LP, keeping equipment parked.
On Friday afternoon, Dave Albrecht said he had 1,600 gallons of LP on the farm -- enough to dry corn through Saturday morning or about 20,000 bushels.

The first-of-its-kind rankings show that oil refineries, power plants and cement plants lead all industrial facilities statewide in pumping out carbon dioxide, a byproduct of burning fossil fuels that has been building up in the Earth's atmosphere in increasing concentrations.
The single largest California emitter last year was the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, which emitted 4.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gases.

Flooding damage deadlines Monday

Nov. 22--Catoosa, Walker and Chattooga county residents and business owners have until Monday to complete applications for federal relief after September's floods.
"That window is going to be closing," said Walker County Emergency Management Director David Ashburn.
Monday is the deadline for individual assistance from the Small Business Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

As a result, we are able to provide additional information (unaudited) as of year-end 2008 regarding our mineral interests including estimates of proved developed producing (PDP) reserves and future net cash flows.
We initiated an internal reserve analysis of producing wells where Forestar has a royalty interest and engaged a third-party petroleum engineering firm, Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc.
