Forest's COPD Drug Disappoints

Yesterday, Forest Laboratories (FRX) announced disappointing results from the mid-stage clinical trials of oglemilast, meant for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that usually affects smokers. The drug was being developed with Glenmark Pharmaceuticals S.A. (Switzerland), a wholly owned unit of India-based Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. The phase IIb trial was conducted to determine the proper dosage for the drug. The 12-week trial was conducted on 428 patients aged 40 years or more and who had been smokers for about ten years. Oglemilast failed to show any improvement compared to a placebo during the study which evaluated a once-daily dosage of the drug in three dosage strengths (200 mcg, 400 mcg and 800 mcg). All 428 patients were randomized to receive one of the three doses of oglemilast (n=320) or placebo (n=108) and were[More...]

Large companies include Amgen, Biogen Idec, Genetech, Genzyme, Life Technologies and Monsanto. Because so many drugs are now developed using biotechnology, the biotech and pharmaceutical industries overlap. Demand for biotechnology products and services is driven primarily by the willingness of insurers to pay for new medical treatments. With the pending introduction of Obamacare, new uncertainties are introduced to this industry. Biotech products and treatments tend to be expensive and the drive to reduce costs through rationing will no doubt effect this industry. The profitability of individual companies depends on the discovery and effective marketing of new products.
Forest Labs Hold Reiterated

In total, nearly $47 billion in funds are expected to be returned to biotechnology investors. We've come up with an effective "basket approach" to re-deploy those funds back into the biotech sector -- in search of the next Genentech. Antisense Makes a Lot of Sense For a little over $13, investors can pick up one share of Isis Pharmaceuticals (ISIS).
