More than a third of the year has passed and the markets have rebounded nicely from their lows to turn a small profit on the year. It seems that the worst may be behind us when it comes to equity prices as many stocks have rallied more than 50% this year alone. Here at Bullish Bankers we published a “Best Stocks of 2009? newsletter at the beginning of the year, and our equities have performed very admirably when compared to our benchmark, the S&P 500. This article is designed to give a recap of how our equities have performed and give some additional explanation to our initial stock picking process. Best Performing Stocks the past Month

Below is a list of the best performing stocks of the past month. I always like to look at these lists to see what the market is favoring, try to find some new ideas, and to see how stocks I favor do in the big scope of things.Since I focus mostly on mid caps and large caps I focused on market capitalizations of $2 billion or greater, trading at least 100,000 shares a day, and a price of at least $10. Using a minimum return of 12% for the past month, the list generated 179 names. Keep in mind the S&P 500 is up around 2.5% in that same time frame, and if not for Friday's big rally it would of been closer to 1.2%. Below is a list of all stocks returning >7% in the past week, and over $2 billion in market cap. Always interesting to see what is in favor, and when the market bounces where the money is flowing - the group below is sorted from highest to lowest returnMain themes that were winners last week were: solar, home builders, fertilizer, retail, coal, oil services, and infrastructure. The fund was represented very well - of the 52 long positions, 17 were represented in this group (I bolded the names) (note: PBR is represented by its very heavy weighting in Brazilian index ETF - EWZ).
