U.S. Governement Cancels BASIC Program, Benefits GeoEye

Well, it looks like our current economic climate was good for something. The AP has reported that the U.S. government, feeling the pressure of the current economic crisis and as a result of the their need to bail out and possibly fund over $700 billion in debt, has canceled their proposed Broad Area Space-Based Imagery Collection satellite system, or BASIC, which would have launched two commercial grade satellites similar to the ones already in use by GeoEye (NASDAQ: GEOY), and it’s only U.S. based rival DigitalGlobe (NYSE:DGI).

Under awards during the first and second quarters of 2009, GeoEye will provide the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency a significant amount of value-added, imagery-based geospatial-intelligence products. DULLES, Va., May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GeoEye, Inc. today reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2009.
In addition, we began recognizing deferred revenue related to the cost share from NGA for GeoEye-1.
Beginning in the first quarter of 2009, operating expenses included operating costs related to the GeoEye-1 satellite including depreciation, satellite insurance and salary costs.
