Something happened last week that I predicted many months ago. Big Pharm initiated a collaboration with one of the stem cell companies I recommended to my Breakthrough Technology Alert readers. Specifically, Geron Corp. (NASDAQ: GERN) announced a partnership with GE Healthcare. The deal is to develop and sell drug-discovery technologies derived from two stem cell lines approved by the Bush administration. The stock rose over 10%, adding about $70 million to Geron’s capitalization. I don’t write this to crow about being right. I write this because it is critically important that you understand that this is just the tip of the iceberg. For anybody familiar with the way pharma interacts with disruptive[More...]

Blue Chips Lead Rally After Early Sharp Setback

The indices put on a steady rally all session after early morning sharp weakness, and ended in the positive column, other than the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX). The blue chip indices, in particular, rallied back steadily to end near the highs of the intraday 5-wave rally. The day started out with a gap down and a sharp move lower. A snapback to resistance failed, and they rolled over sharply, reaching 1425 NDX and 886 S&P 500 (SPX), slightly below support. They came back, tested resistance for much of the afternoon and couldn’t get through, but late in the session managed to punch out on some late short covering. Net on the day the Dow was up 44.13 to 8324.87, and the S&P 500 up just 2.30 at 898.72, but that was 12 points off its low. The Nasdaq 100 was down 5.27, still about 17 points off its low as well. The technicals ended[More...]

General Electric (NYSE: GE) Lights Another Fire

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is no stranger to expanding its business by branching out into new territory, anymore than it is to controversy. Over 100 years of business will make any company familiar with just about anything. So after taking on the world of broadcasting, banking, renewable energy and the tech world, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the behemoth should want to expand again. This time, it’s into the healthcare sector - again - and more specifically into the highly controversial field of embryonic stem cell research. GE’s healthcare unit has already made a name for itself through its advanced imaging systems such as CT-scan machines, but just like the larger company itself, it isn’t content to stop there. Now joining forces with Geron Corp. (Nasdaq: <a[More...]

Stem cells are a biologic marvel and a political football. Because stem cells never die and they have the ability to evolve into nearly all cell types, they are the leading source of groundbreaking medical advances. For example, researchers hope to transform stem cells into heart cells, which could be injected into heart-attack patients to repair the damage. In the lab, scientists have pulled off virtual miracles with stem cells. Rats with crushed spinal cords are able to walk again after growing new neurons. Mice with diabetes grow new pancreas cells that secrete insulin. Such results have spurred hope in patients with debilitating diseases. Famously, Christopher Reeves, the actor who played Superman, believed stem cells could cure his spinal cord injury, perhaps allowing him to walk again. He died before he got his chance...
After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. Volume was not particularly high today. - SPY broke down out of a rising wedge on a very slight increase in volume.
Another Huge Day For The Bulls

It was another huge day for the bulls, as the market exploded after a brief early morning dip, and then ramped up in stair-step fashion for the rest of the day, closing near the highs for the day. The day did start out with a dip that retested yesterday afternoon?s lows but held right there. When they turned around sharply they really started to accelerate. Within 30 minutes they took out the double-top from yesterday on the NDX, and within an hour took out the SPX highs. At that point it was bombs away, as the market kept rolling until it reached as high as 7184 and change on the Dow, 752 and change on the SPX and 1167 and change on the NDX.
Another Negative Monday on Wall Street By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The markets had another down day to start the week. I don't know how many consecutive Mondays we've been down. The day did start with a thrust to the upside and they had a nice sharp rally in the first 40 minutes or so that took the indices to the highs for the day, NDX reaching up to 1087 and change and the SPX getting up to over 695. But that was it for the day, and the indices sold off steadily in a 5-weave decline for the rest of the session in a neat orderly channel that closed near the lows for the day. Net on the day the Dow was down just under 80 at 6547, the S&P 500 down 6.85 to 676.53, and the Nasdaq 100 down 20.83 at 1043.87, now about 24 points off its November low, the only index to still be above it..

Geron Corporation (Nasdaq:GERN) today announced the publication of data demonstrating that dendritic cells (DCs) scalably manufactured from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) exhibit the normal functions of naturally occurring human DCs found in the bloodstream. These findings support the use of hESC-derived DCs in therapeutic vaccine applications for cancer and other diseases. Substituting standardized, off-the-shelf hESC-derived DCs for current approaches using DCs obtained from individual patients may result in more cost effective and reliable approaches to cancer immunotherapy.[More...]
