Positions Revisited

I want to revisit some of my stock decisions and see what was the outcome and analyze if there is anything I should have done better. I will try to be intellectually honest with my assessments and recognize my errors. Also i want to look back and see if there are any mental traps that affected my decisions and recognize when i fall for these psychological biases.
Below is all the positions that I have talked about on this blog for over a year or so. All are businesses that I looked to own but did not or I bought and sold.

It's that time of the quarter again. 45 days after the end of Q2 means that we get a slew of 13F filings from the top fund managers in the world. Kicking things off today is Bill Ackman of Pershing Square. (Click on the image to expand it.) Looks like Ackman did a lot of selling in Q2 and very little buying. He completely sold off his stakes in Apartment Investment Co (AIV), Alexander's (ALX), Visa (V), Yum Brands (YUM) and Wendy's[More...]

Notable Bankruptcies Of 2009: Q2

In January I predicted (see Notable Bankruptcies of 2009: Q1) that “major” bankruptcies in 2009 would challenge the 383 mark set in 2001 (the high-water mark after the dotcom bubble). I even suggested that it was possible that we could exceed 400 “major” bankruptcies in 2009. According to Bankruptcydata.com, there have been 156 “major” filings thus far in 2009. Assuming that bankruptcies are equally distributed throughout the year, this puts us on pace for 312 bankruptcies. That is tracking well shy of my prediction. In fact, bankruptcies were down significantly from Q1 to Q2, as there were 90 bankruptcies in the first quarter but only 66 in the second. That stylized fact begs the question: Is that a “green shoot”[More...]

America Is Still the Best Place to Make Money

There's never been a better time to be seeking fortune in America. Right now, we're in a period of great turbulence. Everything in America is up for sale at "panic liquidation" prices. Each foreclosed property and bankruptcy headline you hear about represents another opportunity to make money. One man goes bust and another man makes a fortune. It's the beauty of American capitalism. Assets never die; they just change owners. Take Kirk Kerkorian and Carl Icahn, for example. Kirk Kerkorian is the majority owner of MGM Mirage, a gigantic casino and hotel company. In Las Vegas, it owns half the casinos on the Strip. MGM also owns huge casino resorts in Reno, Atlantic City, Detroit, Biloxi, and Macau. In the boom times, like in 2005 and 2006, MGM's management borrowed too much money. Now Vegas is in a bust, and the company is having[More...]
