Earnings Review Of Note Monday-Tuesday

Some names I am looking at early this week Monday Fund holdings - Baidu.com (BIDU) and First National Financial (FNF). The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. I expect good things but the stock action has been weak"ish" and this is the more expensive of the two - not that[More...]

Doug Kass' 20 Suprises for 2009

As promised, presented at TheStreet.com are Doug Kass' 20 Surprises for 2009; Doug is a hedge fund manager who I have been following for a long time and who excels in non Kool Aid analysis. Probably because his main hedge fund has had a short bias all these years, hence you tend to be more cynical when you need to fight drunk bulls every day. As Doug says, Wall Street is dominated by group think and herd behavior. While standing in front of the herd is dangerous, one can find some profitable opportunities from thinking outside the box. These are his predictions from last year (Jan 2: Doug Kass 20 Predictions for 2008)<span class="blsp-spelling-error"[More...]

Best Performing Stocks Of The Past Quarter

Back in early October I wrote in (Oct 1: Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide) how there simply was no asset class (ex US Treasuries and US Dollar), no sector, no country to hide in. Everything stunk, and in fact it got worse in the ensuing weeks. September, October, November 2008 might be the worst 3 months ever (I don't have the date) but if not, it has to be in the top 3. We used to run a weekly screen here to identify areas of relative strength - it's been useless for months on end. But for curiousity sake I ran it to see the best performers over the past quarter. Criteria Market capitalization $1.50B+ Average trading volume 100K+Stock price $10+Return this[More...]

Greenhill & Co. (GHL) continues to distinguish itself from its Wall Street brethren by avoiding risky bets and growing its earnings. The company's share price has been rallying since July. Company Description Greenhill & Co., with its subsidiaries, operates as an independent investment banking firm in North America and Europe. The company was founded in 1996, has a market cap of $1.80 billion and is headquartered in New York, New York. The shock waves reverberating across Wall Street have forced many investment banks to either declare bankruptcy or convert into deposit holding companies.
Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.<br[More...]

On Bank Holding Companies And Bailouts

BHC or Bust The news that Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are in the process of becoming Bank Holding Companies (BHCs) doesn't come as a complete surprise. If these firms were to remain independent, they had to radically reposition their balance sheets by bolstering capital and lengthening debt maturities. Further, the trend towards greater transparency is already afoot, so the kinds of disclosures required under the BHC Act were in the offing, anyway. Finally, by become a BHC you have access to the Fed window, access of some consequence given today's tumultuous market conditions.
