Gold broke out to new highs today confirming a renewed bull market in the golden metal. Using GLD for a proxy, you can see that gold broke out to new all time highs in early October and cruised up over $104. After basing for two weeks GLD pulled in hard in a brutal shakeout move. The previous all-time highs were $100.44 and GLD saw some profit-taking as the dollar bounced. My post on October 28th could not have been more well-timed. My post went up when GLD was printing $100.67 and the low of the drop was $100.65. Upon retesting previous highs and finding continued buying support, gold exploded to new highs in just 4 days.[More...]

A 1% bounce in the dollar last week precipitated a 4% drop in the equity markets and a 1% fall in gold prices. The dollar's slow, controlled deterioration since the March 2009 high has shown a very tight inverse correlation to rising gold and equity prices. This week was no different as the relatively large jump in the dollar saw a sharp reaction from other assets priced in dollars.[More...]

The inverse correlation between the dollar currency and assets priced in dollars has been very strong the last couple months given the increased volatility of the dollar currency. The bounce in the greenback precipitated a 350-point drop in the Dow Jones and a $40 an ounce fall in gold prices. A good deal of our profits in gold have evaporated after only taking a very small portion off at $104 on the stalling in momentum. We looked for a holding of the rising trendline at $102 but that was not to be. The dollar had other ideas as it continues its bounce off support.[More...]

Gold saw a 1.5% drop today edging below $1,040 an ounce with the GLD following suit dropping $1.63. The drop brings GLD into a crucial support area at $102. GLD saw a sharp drop at the end of September as well dropping from over $99 into the $97 support level. GLD held, quickly reversed off support and pushed to new highs. The pull-in acted as a shakeout of weak holders allowing gold to quickly rally without the overhead resistance from weaker sellers.[More...]
