GameStop (NYSE: GME): Upgraded To Conviction Buy At Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs is upgrading GameStop (NYSE:GME) to Conviction Buy from Neutral this morning with a $28 price target. Firm believes valuation has fallen below their industry growth framework, and earnings expectations, for a long time aggressive, are now beatable, in their view. Also, they see a powerful cash flow story emerging as GME nears paying off its remaining debt and could turn to buying back shares. Lastly, they see secular concerns around the business as overblown; digital downloading is not an existential threat as current console games are too big to download, and the Used business has significant barriers to entry; GME should continue to dominate that market. GameStop (GME) Earnings Plunge

GameStop Corporation (GME), the biggest video game retailer, reported dismal second-quarter results with a low-single-digit decline in the top line, but a double-digit fall in the bottom line. These were driven by sluggish demand for video game consoles and new software due to the lack of a popular game title release. However, the company’s share in the new video game market increased by 2.0%. Earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter under review came in at 23 cents, below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 29 cents, and plummeted 32.4% year over year from 34 cents reported in the prior-year quarter. Revenue for the quarter declined 3.7% to $1,738.5 million compared to $1,804.4 million reported in the year ago quarter, following an increase of 9.2% in the first quarter of 2009.[More...]

Due to the effects of the recession and strong prior year comparisons, the video game industry experienced a sharp decline in consumer spending during the quarter. - GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo GameStop (GME), the world’s largest video game retailer with more than 6,000 stores worldwide, reported second quarter earnings this morning. OnLive to Stream Console-Quality Games Over the Internet

Oct. 1--OnLive, a new service that hopes to shake up the video game industry by streaming console-quality games over the Internet, is preparing to launch.
And over the summer, the Palo Alto company opened up the service to outside game developers.
OnLive still hasn't said exactly when its subscription-based service will launch or how much it will cost, but CEO Steve Perlman said it will be up and running sometime "this winter."
