More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. Nat'l Oilwell Varco Still Strong - Analyst Blog

Houston, Texas based National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NOV) reported strong third-quarter 2008 results, driven by continued robust demand for its drilling equipment, particularly for international offshore rigs. Revenue for the quarter was up 9% sequentially and 40% year-over-year to $3.61 billion. Despite the credit crisis, new orders of $2.4 billion during the quarter brought the total backlog to a record $11.8 billion, highlighting a very high level of earnings visibility going forward. Approximately 90% of the total backlog pertains to international markets, while about 85% of the total relates to offshore equipment. National Oilwell Varco - Another Solid Result

We've exited a lot of pure "oil" plays - well frankly we never had huge positions in direct oil plays but we've had some exposure over the year to the oil services space due to the fact that with oil at $60, $80, $100, $120, or $140 they should thrive. GMU Study Finds Northern Virginia Housing Market Steadies

Oct. 5--The housing market in Northern Virginia has steadied these past few months due largely to falling prices and to the nearness of government jobs, according to statistics compiled by George Mason University's Center for Regional Analysis.
Moreover, the future economy for the region bodes well, as the GMU estimates for 2010 and beyond show a bounceback of gross regional product levels to those seen in 2003 and 2004.
A healthier economy means a healthier housing market -- and, in fact, GMU's study predicts just that for the region, including Prince William County.

Northeast Ohio Outpaces Nation in Several Industries

Jul. 13--An economic-development group is preparing to brag about the increasing impact of professional, scientific and technical industries in Northeast Ohio.
Team Northeast Ohio, which promotes a 16-county area, is releasing a report today that shows the gross regional product of those industries grew by 79 percent from 1993 to 2008.
The 79 percent works out to growth of about 5 percent a year, which is significant, said Jacob Duritsky, Team NEO research manager.

Research, Development Growing: Northeast Ohio Expanding Twice As Fast As National Average, Analysis Finds

Jul. 13--A new analysis by the researchers at Team NEO shows Northeast Ohio's scientific research and development community has been growing more than twice as fast as the national average.
Another bright spot in the Team NEO report: The gross regional product of the area's legal services sector is also doubling the country's pace.
While the analysis does not seek to explain the data, Team NEO chief Tom Waltermire noted the area has a mix of well-established research and development companies (such as Akron's Bridgestone technical center) and newcomers (like Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems in Stark County).

Sep. 2--Was there ever really a chance the peace process between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front would amount to anything more than a cessation of hostilities--or ceasefire?
And wasn't it leading for our Republic of the Philippines to be dismembered, with territories defined by the MILF's leaders as their Bangsamoro homeland turned into an independent state?
Ever since peace talks between the government and the MILF began in 1996, ceasefires have been broken.

Standard & Poor's Announces Changes to U.S. Indices - 15-04-08

S&P 500 constituent National Oilwell Varco Inc. will replace S&P 500 constituent Rockwell Automation Inc. in the S&P 100, and Affiliated Managers Group Inc. will replace Grant Prideco Inc. in the S&P MidCap 400 after the close of trading on Monday, April 21.
