Yesterday, Petroleos Mexicanos (also known as Pemex), Mexico’s state oil company, said that it has awarded a contract to Houston-based oilfield service provider – Halliburton Company (HAL) – to drill 170 wells at the large Chicontepec oil basin.? Pemex said that the deal, worth approximately $159 million, will last three years and involve four drilling rigs. Halliburton is expected to commence work on the Chicontopec fields (in northern Mexico) from the next month. This will mark the oilfield services giant’s debut in an area where its competitors Schlumberger Limited (SLB) and Weatherford International (WFT) already have an established[More...]

Halliburton CEO: Natural Gas Prices To Remain Weak

I'm not going to cover the full details of the Halliburton quarter (earnings lower, but beat estimates...we know the deal), but it was interesting that the CEO went out of his way to speak about natural gas prices. (data via Reuters). Halliburton Co, the world's second-largest oilfield services company, posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Monday, boosting its shares, but it warned that North American natural gas markets were likely to stay weak through the end of the year. Natural gas prices in the United States have tumbled to less than half of year-ago levels, and high inventories were expected to curb spending by energy producers on new wells. "Due to the[More...]

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.<br[More...]
