Barclays is out with an interesting call on Hess Corp. (NYSE:HES) upgrading the shares to Overweight from Equal weight and maintaining their $75 price target. According to the analyst the upgrade comes following recent sharp underperformance. As one of the most oil-levered producers within their research universe, they believe Hess is well positioned to benefit from a rising oil price environment while offering a significant exploration potential upside with no sizable upfront premium. Firm notes that although they have long been intrigued by the company’s vast long-term resource potential in Brazil, Ghana, Libya, and Australia, they were uncomfortable about the shares’ valuation. Despite the recent commodity-price induced weakness that has helped improve valuation, we are keeping our Hold recommendation unchanged for Hess Corp. (HES) shares at this stage. The near-term outlook for the stock in particular and the overall group in general remains unfavorable. We will revisit our outlook for the stock once early signs of stability emerge in the crude oil market, which we believe will be sooner than later. We continue to see upstream momentum at Hess on the back of the company's leverage to high crude oil prices and a large inventory of projects in Brazil, Australia Libya and Ghana. On September 4, Hess Corporation announced that the Nimblefoot-1 exploration well on Australia's Northwest Shelf discovered natural gas. The well encountered 93 feet of net gas pay. Energy Now Expected to Keep Earnings Crown

Reports for the second quarter are starting to trickle in, and soon that trickle will turn to a flood as Alcoa kicked-off the second quarter earnings season. At this point the reported data is not that significant. Just 32 firms, or 6.40% of the S&P 500, have reported. Nonetheless, this very limited sample is somewhat encouraging. Positive surprises are leading disappointments by a 3.2:1 ratio, inline with recent historical norms. The median surprise is also inline with recent history, and perhaps a bit better than normal at 4.04%. Expect both the surprise ratio and the median surprise to jump around quite a bit in the early going of the earnings season. The median year-over-year EPS growth rate of 9.52% would be wonderful news for the market, if it can be held on to as the season progresses. Columbia Gas to buy its supplies at auction: Customers unlikely to see major change in service, billing

Dec. 3--Columbia Gas of Ohio will switch to a new system for buying its gas under a plan approved yesterday by state regulators.
Starting in February, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio will hold an annual auction at which wholesale gas suppliers will compete to offer the lowest prices to supply Columbia.
Two other Ohio gas companies -- Dominion in the Cleveland area and Vectren in the Dayton area -- already have switched to this system, which the PUCO says has led to slightly lower prices for customers.
