Dec. 1--OLIVE HILL -- Lonnie and Sharon McCoy's monthly heating bill for their Olive Hill mobile home reached more than $400 last winter.
Daylight showed through the floor in several places and the blustery winter air flowed in through cracks in both the back and front doors.
Sharon McCoy said the couple realized the mobile home needed weatherization but they didn't know where to start and could not afford it on their limited income.

County to test Rogers Road wells: Residents still wary of possible waste transfer station on Millhouse Road

Nov. 22--CHAPEL HILL -- Rogers Road residents have been asking for better water systems for more than a decade.
Last week, public officials continued to talk about helping them, and the Orange County Board of Commissioners actually put some money into it.
Commissioners approved up to $4,000 to test the wells and septic systems at 36 homes along Rogers Road.

Rogers Road activist invited to White House: Campbell to discuss problems concerning clean energy, public health

Nov. 15--CHAPEL HILL -- One of the town's leading activists for environmental justice in the Rogers Road community has been invited to the Obama Administration's green energy table, and he's hoping to come back from Washington later this week with a commitment for federal stimulus money to clean up long-standing water and air quality issues in his neighborhood.
He will be at the White House on Friday to speak to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about issues in the Rogers-Eubanks roads community related to clean energy and public health.
Campbell, president of the Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood Association and co-founder and co-chairman of the Coalition to End Environmental Racism, among his many environmental roles, has been invited to join a panel in a White House briefing on the public health benefits of a clean energy economy.

Protesters fired up about UNC coal use

Nov. 12--CHAPEL HILL -- Nearly 40 students rallied in front of UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp's office Wednesday, calling coal-fired energy "dangerous and dirty" and urging the university to adopt clean energy solutions.
"We are proud to be Tar Heels, and proud that UNC has historically taken the lead when it comes to some of the most critical issues we face," said Sara Mishamandani, one of the rally speakers, said in a Sierra Club news release.
"We want to continue that legacy by addressing our dependence on coal.

A TASTE OF Training: Reporter wonders how airmen ever get used to chemical protection suits

Nov. 9--HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- After 10 minutes in my Air Force issued flack jacket, my shoulders began to scream with pain.
Friday was Phase 2 of the Hill Air Force Base Operational Readiness Exercise, a training drill that happens three times per year and prepares airman for combat deployments, possible terrorist threats to the base, and an annual Air Force inspection.
To get a first-hand look at what goes on during the exercise and get a small taste of what airmen go through during combat situations, I suited up with Hill's Security Forces Squadron.

Sep. 6--SNOW HILL -- When you walk through the halls of Greene Central High School there's one common scene -- students peering into laptop computer screens
During a recent study break between classes, Greene Central junior Teena Coats worked to finish an i-Movie she produced that featured Native American history.
Coats is among nearly 2,100 students in Greene County Schools that use school-issued Apple laptop computers to complete class assignments.

Sep. 5--PLEASANT HILL -- The developer of a series of independent-living homes in North Cornwall Township has developed a bright idea to dim the complaints of neighbors.
Lebanon Valley Catholic Home Inc., the developer for Heritage Commons, intends to present a final landscaping plan around the perimeter of the development off Oak Street that will shield neighboring property owners from the development's bright streetlights, the township supervisors learned this week.
Heritage Commons sits on 50 acres along Oak Street and, when completed, will be the site for 85 independent-living homes, 153 apartments, assisted-living services and a community center.

UNC J School Launches News Web Site

Aug. 13--CHAPEL HILL -- The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC has launched an experimental multimedia news Web site that explores U.S. energy use and its relationship to the country's demographics.
Ten Carolina journalism students selected as News21 fellows have been working since January with two faculty members -- joined by two students from Harvard University and the University of Missouri -- to produce stories about wind farms, the electrical grid, mountaintop removal, coal activists, biofuels, religious response to environmental issues and other topics.
"Changing demographics and energy use is a critical issue in North Carolina and the nation," said Jean Folkerts, dean of the school.

CARLSBAD, Calif., May 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. today announced GAAP financial results for the first quarter of 2009.
Operating expense for the first quarter of 2009 was $12.6 million, as compared to $10.9 million in the first quarter of 2008 and $18.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Fourth quarter 2008 operating expenses included an impairment charge of $5.4 million against long-lived assets and intangibles, $0.7 million in share-based compensation expense, $0.8 million in restructuring expenses and $0.4 million in foreign currency gains.
