The small private school tucked into the heart of Spring Hill opened its doors to the public on Wednesday to celebrate its conversion to solar power.

Sep. 6--SNOW HILL -- When you walk through the halls of Greene Central High School there's one common scene -- students peering into laptop computer screens
During a recent study break between classes, Greene Central junior Teena Coats worked to finish an i-Movie she produced that featured Native American history.
Coats is among nearly 2,100 students in Greene County Schools that use school-issued Apple laptop computers to complete class assignments.

Residents Shine Light on Heritage Commons Problem

Sep. 5--PLEASANT HILL -- The developer of a series of independent-living homes in North Cornwall Township has developed a bright idea to dim the complaints of neighbors.
Lebanon Valley Catholic Home Inc., the developer for Heritage Commons, intends to present a final landscaping plan around the perimeter of the development off Oak Street that will shield neighboring property owners from the development's bright streetlights, the township supervisors learned this week.
Heritage Commons sits on 50 acres along Oak Street and, when completed, will be the site for 85 independent-living homes, 153 apartments, assisted-living services and a community center.

UNC J School Launches News Web Site

Aug. 13--CHAPEL HILL -- The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC has launched an experimental multimedia news Web site that explores U.S. energy use and its relationship to the country's demographics.
Ten Carolina journalism students selected as News21 fellows have been working since January with two faculty members -- joined by two students from Harvard University and the University of Missouri -- to produce stories about wind farms, the electrical grid, mountaintop removal, coal activists, biofuels, religious response to environmental issues and other topics.
"Changing demographics and energy use is a critical issue in North Carolina and the nation," said Jean Folkerts, dean of the school.

Snow Hill Receives Funds for Solar Mixers: Mixers Will Enhance Taste of the Town's Water

Aug. 9--SNOW HILL -- The water in Snow Hill will have crisper, more refreshing taste when the town installs solar mixers to its water tanks later this year.
This month, the town was notified it will receive $91,000 in stimulus funding to pursue the solar mixer project.
"The solar mixers will help maintain the quality of water that is stored in the tanks and will help reduce the cost of maintenance," town administrator Bob Clark said.

Toben to Lead Policy Council

Aug. 8--CHAPEL HILL -- A Chapel Hill developer involved in renewable energy systems has been named chairman of the state's newly reshaped Energy Policy Council and will be expected to spearhead the creation of green jobs for North Carolina.
Gov. Beverly Perdue announced the appointment of Tim Toben to the post during a bill-signing ceremony at the Innova Tech research and development laboratory in Morrisville on Friday morning.
He expects to spend about half of his work week devoted to Greenbridge duties and the other half to the Energy Policy Council.

New UNC Energy Policy Regulates Building Temeratures

Jul. 27--CHAPEL HILL -- Students returning to UNC's campus next month might find temperatures inside classrooms a little warmer than usual or a little cooler than normal during winter months.
Under a new "Energy Use Policy" recently adopted, UNC officials want thermostats set no lower than 78 degrees during summer months or higher than 69 degrees during cooler weather.
Campus facilities, such as labs, animal facilities, museums, libraries and computer-server spaces, places where strict temperatures must be observed, will be exempt from the new policy.

Blue Hill Gets Federal Funds for Sewer System Extension

Jul. 16--BLUE HILL, Maine -- The town has been awarded a grant-loan package of $2.75 million that will fund the extension of the municipal sewer system.
According to Selectman Jim Schatz, residents will have to accept the federal funds in a vote before the town can move ahead with the project.
Plans call for the extension of the existing sewer lines from the Congregational Church up West Main Street to the intersection with South Street.

The company recognized net revenue in the second quarter of 2009 of $54.3 million, as compared to $71.0 million for the second quarter of 2008 and $53.9 million for the first quarter of 2009.
Gross margin for the second quarter of 2009 was 14.7 percent, compared to 10.2 percent in the second quarter of 2008 and 17.2 percent in the first quarter of 2009.

CARLSBAD, Calif., May 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. today announced GAAP financial results for the first quarter of 2009.
Operating expense for the first quarter of 2009 was $12.6 million, as compared to $10.9 million in the first quarter of 2008 and $18.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Fourth quarter 2008 operating expenses included an impairment charge of $5.4 million against long-lived assets and intangibles, $0.7 million in share-based compensation expense, $0.8 million in restructuring expenses and $0.4 million in foreign currency gains.
