More Short Picks For Thursday

Sellers appear to be gaining the upper hand, as selling gained momentum in the second half of US trading yesterday, and Asian markets sold off overnight. While it is a bit premature to call the end of the rally, given yesterday's volume, a few factors indicate that we may resume our downtrend soon: - Momentum appears to be shifting. European markets are also lower this morning in early trading. - Individual chart setups are increasingly favoring short sellers. - Sentiment seems to have shifted too quickly toward bullishness. Investors have been too hasty in calling a bottom here, as Mish Shedlock discusses in his column Unrelenting Bullishness. - Overall, the volume of this rally has been rather weak. - MT earnings disappointed yesterday, prompting a reversal in commodity stocks. Oil also gave up its[More...]

We continue to see EOG Resources, Inc. (EOG) shares as a core holding in the large-cap exploration and production (E&P) space for the company?s demonstrated ability to achieve consistent production growth, primarily through organic means. EOG?s strong positions in Texas Barnett Shale and North Dakota?s Bakken plays provide it with a multi-year inventory of development drilling opportunities. EOG has a very strong organic production-growth profile, with volumes expected to increase by approximately 15% in 2008. We are keeping our recommendation, price objective and estimates unchanged at this stage. Long-term production-growth visibility has significantly improved following recent discoveries, and the management is guiding towards annual growth of approximately 14% in the 2009-2010 period.
Hittite Microwave's High Margins

We maintain our Buy rating on the shares of Hittite Microwave Corp. (HITT). Although the company provided fairly weak guidance for the third quarter, business at HITT remains strong. The company is gaining traction with new product lines, which is driving sales growth, and maintains high margins. Hittite is currently trading at 17.6x our estimated 2009 EPS of $1.99. Although a premium to its peers on an absolute P/E multiple, its stronger growth rate makes the stock look more attractive with a PEG ratio of 0.6. The company?s track record of growth and strong margins are impressive as it has posted better than 19% growth year-to-date in a fairly lackluster market. We believe that the stock should trade at a premium to its peers given its stronger IP position and strength in large and growing markets.
Headline-grabbing news last week regarding the Hewlett-Packard buyout of Electronic Data Systems prompted us to check in with Zacks senior technology analyst Steve Biggs, CFA, who covers both companies. We also found out which tech stocks he rates the strongest for the near term. Does Hewlett-Packard's buying out of EDS have any immediate impact on the tech sector overall, or does it mostly just make HP a bigger competitor versus IBM? With the addition of EDS (EDS), HP will have triple the size of its services business and become a much closer competitor to IBM ([More...]

I want to get to some earnings results in a moment, but first I thought I would ask you what type of impact you see the Microsoft-Yahoo saga currently having on the industry as a whole. Do you have any general comments on that? Well, it could have an impact on the online advertising market, which Microsoft (MSFT) has been working to get in through acquisitions and through its internal developments on MSN. This would certainly give them a bigger presence. I guess time will tell if it goes through, but I would have to think, with the premium bein[More...]

As we look to usher in a new year, we take a look back at 2007 for a moment in the technology sector. Today we are joined by Steve Biggs, CFA, who is the senior technology analyst for Zacks Equity Research. How has the technology sector in 2007 been on an industry-by-industry basis? Can we go down that, real quick? Sure. You know, overall it was a pretty good year for the tech sector. I think if you break it down by industry, you see a few different dynamics. Of course, the consumer ended up being pretty strong all year, despite a number of concerns with the housing market slowing and problems in that area. The consumer still ended up spending and put in a strong performance. I think the one notable weakness early in the year was semiconductors, where I cover a couple of companies: SanDisk (<a href='http://www.zacks.com/research/report.php?t=SND[More...]
