Trade Deficit Improves

In August, the monthly trade deficit fell to $30.7 billion from $31.9 billion in July. We got improvement from both sides as exports rose by $0.2 billion to $128.2 billion and imports fell to $158.9 billion from $159.8 billion in July, a decrease of $0.9 billion. AutoNation (AN) will release its sales and earnings results for the third quarter ended Sep 30, 2009, on Thursday, Oct 29, 2009, before the market opens. The Florida-based automotive retailer reported earnings of $55 million or 31 cents per share in the second quarter of 2009. This was above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents per share despite a difficult industry environment. Japan’s second-biggest automaker Honda (HMC) plans to enhance its production level in the U.S. from September. The company will boost output by operating its plants in Ohio and Alabama during Saturdays. WASHINGTON - Unemployment rose in 23 states last month as the economy struggled to create jobs in the early stages of the recovery.
Forty-three states reported job losses in September, while only seven gained jobs, the Labor Department said Wednesday.
The U.S. jobless rate rose to 9.8 percent in September, a 26-year high, from 9.7 percent.

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana's unemployment rate fell to 9.6 percent in September, down 0.3 percentage points from August, as growth in the manufacturing and service sectors helped Indiana gain the most new jobs of any state.
The state's seasonally adjusted jobless rate, which fell from 9.9 percent in August, reflected a regional trend.
The Midwest was the nation's only region where the unemployment rate declined.

Honda Output to Fall 30 Percent From Peak Year

Oct. 20--TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co.'s domestic car production in fiscal 2009 is expected to decline by about 30 percent compared to its all-time peak, to about 900,000, sources said.
Honda has asked auto parts manufacturers -- the company's main suppliers -- to cut their fixed costs, including personnel, maintenance and operating costs of domestic plants, by about 30 percent, it was learned Monday.
Given such factors as the population decrease, the strong yen and the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Honda predicts the decline in domestic production--which has dropped by 30 percent on the basis of sales compared with figures from before the global economic slump--will be protracted, the sources said.

A 36-year veteran of the Japanese automotive and industrial group, Mr Adisak is currently executive vice-president of the Bangkok-based Asian Honda Motor and managing director of Thai Honda Manufacturing.

The Japan Equity Fund, Inc. (NYSE: JEQ), a closed-end management investment company, today announced its performance results for the three months ended July 31, 2009, the third quarter of its 2009 fiscal year.
As a result, the net realized and unrealized gain were approximately U.S. $9,238,000 (equivalent to a gain of U.S. $0.64 per share) for the nine months ended July 31, 2009.
In comparison, during the quarter ended July 31, 2008, the Fund incurred a net investment loss of approximately U.S. $59,000 (equivalent to a loss of less than U.S. $0.01 per share) resulting in net investment income for the nine-month period of approximately U.S. $376,000 (equivalent to income of U.S. $0.03 per share).

Honda's consolidated net income attributable to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. for the fiscal first quarter ended June 30, 2009 totaled JPY 7.5 billion (USD 79 million), a decrease of 95.6% from the same period in 2008.
Basic net income attributable to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. per common share for the quarter amounted to JPY 4.17 (USD 0.04), a decrease of JPY 91.39 from JPY 95.56 for the corresponding period last year.
Consolidated operating income for the quarter totaled JPY 25.1 billion (USD 262 million), a decrease of 88.0%, due primarily to decreased profit attributable to decreased revenue, the increase in fixed costs per unit as a result of reduced production and the unfavorable impact of currency effects caused by the appreciation of the Japanese yen, despite decreased SG&A expenses and R&D expenses and continuing cost reduction efforts.
