Trade Deficit Improves

In August, the monthly trade deficit fell to $30.7 billion from $31.9 billion in July. We got improvement from both sides as exports rose by $0.2 billion to $128.2 billion and imports fell to $158.9 billion from $159.8 billion in July, a decrease of $0.9 billion. AutoNation (AN) will release its sales and earnings results for the third quarter ended Sep 30, 2009, on Thursday, Oct 29, 2009, before the market opens. The Florida-based automotive retailer reported earnings of $55 million or 31 cents per share in the second quarter of 2009. This was above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents per share despite a difficult industry environment. Phil Sielatycki came close to an accidental overdose at a Shell station in Apex.
He parked his Audi, swiped his credit card and lifted a yellow fuel nozzle on a blue pump marked "E85 -- 85% Ethanol."

That bandwagon is expanding to include dealers themselves.
Headquarter Honda, a new dealership under construction in Clermont on State Road 50, is being built to achieve LEED Platinum certification, meaning that it should meet the extremely aggressive standards set by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council.

Nov. 7--Thai automobile and parts makers have a bright future in the region even though investment inflows into the sector would likely be delayed in light of political uncertainties in the country, a leading executive says.
The global auto industry has now passed its lowest point and Asian markets are showing signs of the fastest recovery, with opportunities set to arise from the possible shift of production bases to Asian and Asean markets, said Adisak Rohitasune, deputy chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries.
As for Thailand's automotive production, Mr Adisak offers a positive forecast of at least one million units next year, compared with around 940,000 this year.

The Japan Equity Fund Announces Third Quarter Earnings

The Japan Equity Fund, Inc. (NYSE: JEQ), a closed-end management investment company, today announced its performance results for the three months ended July 31, 2009, the third quarter of its 2009 fiscal year.
As a result, the net realized and unrealized gain were approximately U.S. $9,238,000 (equivalent to a gain of U.S. $0.64 per share) for the nine months ended July 31, 2009.
In comparison, during the quarter ended July 31, 2008, the Fund incurred a net investment loss of approximately U.S. $59,000 (equivalent to a loss of less than U.S. $0.01 per share) resulting in net investment income for the nine-month period of approximately U.S. $376,000 (equivalent to income of U.S. $0.03 per share).

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Reports Consolidated Financial Results For the Fiscal First Quarter Ended June 30, 2009

Honda's consolidated net income attributable to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. for the fiscal first quarter ended June 30, 2009 totaled JPY 7.5 billion (USD 79 million), a decrease of 95.6% from the same period in 2008.
Basic net income attributable to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. per common share for the quarter amounted to JPY 4.17 (USD 0.04), a decrease of JPY 91.39 from JPY 95.56 for the corresponding period last year.
Consolidated operating income for the quarter totaled JPY 25.1 billion (USD 262 million), a decrease of 88.0%, due primarily to decreased profit attributable to decreased revenue, the increase in fixed costs per unit as a result of reduced production and the unfavorable impact of currency effects caused by the appreciation of the Japanese yen, despite decreased SG&A expenses and R&D expenses and continuing cost reduction efforts.

As a result, the net realized and unrealized loss increased to approximately U.S. $3,537,000 (equivalent to a loss of U.S. $0.24 per share) for the six months ended April 30, 2009.
