Job seekers' prospects improve

Dec. 3--Job applicants will have a better chance of finding work next year but employers will be more selective and set tougher contractual terms and targets, says the Adecco Group, a global human resources agency.
It also agrees with the National Economic and Social Development Board that unemployment next year will be 1.4 percent, down from a projected 1.7 percent for 2009, said Tidarat Kanchanawat, country manager of Adecco Consulting Thailand.
Several business sectors have recruited and recalled workers since the global downturn hit Thailand late last year, driving unemployment up to 2.4 percent.

Firms vie to work on new Calvert Cliffs reactor

Nov. 20--Joseph Cunniffe sees the proposed third nuclear reactor at Calvert Cliffs as a huge opportunity for his Sykesville-based firm GSE Systems, which develops simulation and training systems for the power generation industry.
So did more than 100 companies that gathered Thursday in Baltimore for an event drawing suppliers and vendors looking to do business with Areva, the world's largest reactor maker, which is designing and building the proposed third unit with construction company Bechtel.
Under a joint venture called Unistar Nuclear Energy, Constellation Energy Group and French utility Electricite de France wants to build new nuclear plants in the U.S., including one at Calvert Cliffs.

Energy call center creates 70 jobs

Nov. 18--FORTY FORT -- Gateway Energy Services, a Rockland County, N.Y.-based retail supplier of natural gas and electricity, will open a customer service center in Forty Fort, creating 70 full- and part-time jobs.
Officials from the company and the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry announced the economic development Tuesday at a press conference in the 8,545-square-foot space in the Cross Valley West Building on Welles Street, owned by Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services.
The majority of jobs will be telemarketing positions paying a starting salary of $12 an hour plus commission in addition to door-to-door sales positions paying an annual base salary of $20,000 to $30,000 plus commission, said Steve Maslak, president and chief executive officer of Gateway Energy Services.

Guthrie Pushing for More Openness: Bill Would Call for Legislation to Be Put on Internet for 72 Hours Before Voting

Nov. 1--U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, is trying to increase public transparency for Congressional legislation.
Guthrie wants legislation posted online for 72 hours before Congress votes on it and is co-sponsoring HR 554, which was filed earlier this year.
As evidence of the need for such transparency, Guthrie cites the passage of stimulus legislation, the details of which are still unfolding for the public.

Extending Credit: 2 Area Lawmakers Back Prolonging Homebuyer Program

Oct. 21--One of the few bright spots in the nation's struggling housing market has been an $8,000 federal tax credit for first-time homebuyers.
"I'm co-sponsoring a bill to extend it," said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena.
The legislation Schiff referred to is HR 1993, the First Time Homebuyer Credit Extension Act of 2009.

Signs of Employment Life Found Amid Tough Market in Fox Valley: New Hiring Expected in Some Fox Valley Job Sectors

Oct. 13--The Society for Human Resource Management projects that modest hiring is expected to bring more jobs than layoffs this month in the manufacturing and service sectors.
But the forecast in its Leading Indicators of National Employment (LINE) report is tempered by reality.
Specifically, 33 percent of HR professionals surveyed said their firm will increase staffing while 15 percent will cut jobs, according to SHRM's poll that drew responses from 1,000.

Unfortunately, a sense of urgency still seems to be missing.
