Avian Securities: We are positive on the PC Vertical

Avian Securities is out with an interesting call saying that heading into the seasonally slow part of the year, it is easier to be negative on the PC vertical and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) as few positive catalysts are likely to develop. Over the last several days, they believe slower than expected European Notebook sales from DSG and earlier weaker Acer sales were used as rationale by several firms for being negative on the PC vertical.
Good morning. After yesterday's final hour rebound, investors have been served a stark reminder this morning that the problems in the financials are far from over. Bad news from both Barclays (BCS) and Wachovia (WB) top the headlines with growing expectations that we're going to hear a lot more of the same. As you know, investors are trying to quickly get their arms around how exactly to value these firms but it isn't easy. Beyond the financials, investors will remain fixated on the tech space. Yesterday's significant pullback in many of the tech leaders is a red flag that trouble...[More...]

Hutchinson Technology Incorporated announced today that it shipped approximately 107 million suspension assemblies during its fiscal 2009 second quarter ended March 29, 2009, compared with approximately 155 million in the preceding quarter. The company's combined shipments for the mobile and enterprise segments declined more than 50% sequentially, while shipments for the 3.5' ATA segment increased sequentially. The company's average selling price declined sequentially from $0.76 to $0.71 due primarily to this shift in product mix, as well as an expected continuation of aggressive pricing conditions. This decline in average selling price, combined with the lower shipments, resulted in net sales of approximately $79 million for the fiscal 2009 second quarter.[More...]

Hutchinson Technology Announces Restructuring Plan

Hutchinson Technology Incorporated today announced a restructuring plan that includes a 20-25% reduction of its workforce, which totaled approximately 4,500 at the end of November. The company estimates that its financial results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter ending December 28, 2008 will include a charge of $12 million to $16 million related to severance costs. In addition, the company will be implementing a 5% pay reduction for all employees not affected by the workforce reduction. The workforce and pay reductions are expected to be complete by the end of January 2009 and are part of the company's strategy to manage its cash and balance sheet and reduce its overall cost structure by approximately $65 million to $80 million on an annualized basis. The company's plans also include reducing its fiscal year 2009 capital spending from $60 million to $40 million.[More...]
