Investing In Commodities: How To Buy Gold During Secular Market Cycles

Investing in Commodities: How to Buy Gold During Secular Market Cycles by Peter Krauth, Contributing Editor Editor’s Note: With the incredible amount of interest in buying gold and investing in commodities, we’ve turned to Money Morning commodities expert Peter Krauth to give us an idea on where we are in regards to their historic cycles and how investors can take advantage of where we are right now… There’s never been a better time to begin investing in commodities. That’s a very simple statement, but it’s backed by three powerful points: Commodities tend to do well when more popular investments (with retail investors) are doing poorly, and when economic conditions[More...]

I would say that I was whipsawed by the recent gold miner events, except that no trading was done on the post-Fed upside nor the downside until yesterday when HUI reached the first support level, where I added to two positions. So, while it was mildly disappointing to see the rise to new highs reversed so strongly, it was not really unexpected, especially given the mini-panic into gold and the miners after the Fed's public capitulation to inflationary policy.<br[More...]

Gold Stock Mystery

Further to my last post Bullish signs for the inflation trade, I would also like to point out that Warren Buffett, in the latest Berkshire Hathaway letter to shareholders, also indicated that inflation is likely the effect of the macro policy response to the financial crisis (emphasis mine): This debilitating spiral has spurred our government to take massive action. In poker terms, the Treasury and the Fed have gone “all in.” Economic medicine that was previously meted out by the cupful has recently been dispensed by the barrel. These once-unthinkable dosages will almost certainly bring on unwelcome aftereffects. Their precise nature is anyone’s guess, though one likely consequence is an[More...]

HUI has not followed through well after Friday's thrust and it looks like another failure at what is becoming well defined resistance around 300. It's time for at least the more emotional gold bugs to get their panties all up in a wad again... the fix is in, they're shorting gold stocks and manipulating gold so the 'sheeple' don't see how bad things really are. Well, actually the HUI is looking very normal (for a small market that never really acts the way[More...]

Gold Stocks - Current Status

Look, this is the stock market. You are not supposed to feel good. At least you are not supposed to feel good when it is time to be bullish (said the momo-phobic bottom feeder). I read daily of deflation but I see the Fed pathetically planning to monetize the country's long term debt obligations by incestuously buying long dated treasuries. Do you think that is inflationary or are you buying the 'bond market sees deflation' argument? Again, more to write on Bernanke's 'tools' this weekend in NFTRH11, but for now, I want to look at a chart of GDX instead of the usual HUI because it shows more detailed activity, like gaps and volume. Like I wrote,[More...]

Silver - Daily Technical Status

Let's take a look at silver. This metal is usually the recipient of wildly bullish upside action during the frequent manic phases of precious metals runs. I have not looked at silver much because I have been very bearish the metal and in fact my ultimate downside targets have not yet been hit. But the way the scenario is setting up, this wild man could again lead to the upside for a while before any serious downside gets underway next year. In fact, when the silver bulls once again start frothing all over the internet, it maybe be time to take some profits in what I expect to be a nice precious metals rally over the next several months. But[More...]

HUI-Gold Ratio

Using the GLD proxy here during market hours. HUI-Gold ratio has crossed to a daily uptrend for the first time since June by AROON. That is a sweet looking higher low 'W', bullish divergence and throwing in old friend the Williams %R for good measure. It has crossed above -50 which is trend bullish. If the miners clear the noted resistance relative to gold, there should be an a$$ launch soon to come. Beware of a pullback, consolidation, buying opportunity (whatever you want to call it) first however. Or will the gold miners simply keep on going without pause? I doubt it but there are a lot of observers wondering that very thing. HAVE[More...]
