Closing : Lower Finish Trims August Gains Slightly

The major averages close down by less than 1%, clawing back from deeper losses earlier in the session. The DJIA will close August up 3.5% for the month, while the S&P 500 gains 3.4% and the Nasdaq Composite is up 1.5%.

Stocks fell as investors bail on financial stocks on advice from Barron's and weakness in Chinese markets trigger concern about the ability of the global economy to recover from the recession. Energy and consumer-discretionary stocks are leading on the downside.[More...]

Loans Versus Bonds Relative Value: Week Of April 30

Just when we thought the heat-seeking short squeeze in credit land may be subsiding, three new bonds rip tighter: old shorter max-pain name Neiman Marcus, whose bonds tightened by 540 bps, Graham Packaging which ripped by 550 bps and Huntsman Int'l which tightened by 425 bps. As in the last week, the rolling equity squeeze in unique stocks and sectors has caused comparable squeezes in corresponding highly-shorted credits. Some odd names that stand out this week with respect to a disproportionate widening in loans and a tightening in bonds are: BE Aerospace, Centennial Communications, Constellation Brands, First Data Corp and Pantry, although the moves are marginal enough to be likely noise. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"[More...]

Others have picked up on that theme, with the latest being a Minyanville article on buying beaten up stocks. With that in mind, I screened the US market for stocks with the following characteristics: Stock price between $1 and $5 (low-priced stocks)Down at least 80% from a year ago (beaten up)Market cap of $100 million or more (were once "real" companies)Net insider buying in the last six months (some downside protection from insider activity) This screen gives us a list of low-priced[More...]

The Gas Prices Rollercoaster: Why Energy & Infrastructure Are Inextricably Combined by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist, Investment U Friday, January 16, 2008: Issue #917 President-elect Obama takes office in less than a week’s time. While many will be watching closely to see how he handles the ongoing financial crisis, I’ll be equally interested to see how he handles a far more ominous one: our ongoing energy and infrastructure crisis. Regular readers know I believe energy and infrastructure are inextricably combined. We need cheap energy to fuel sustained economic growth. And we need infrastructure in place to move and dispense the energy from its source to its destination. Today I’m going to give you a perfect example of how the two are intertwined, and how one can play off the other to create a positive benefit for all.
