Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." Avnel recorded net loss of $1,395,000 ($0.018 per share) for the three months ended June 30, 2009 compared to net loss of $2,102,000 ($0.03 per share) in the second quarter of 2008.
Whilst revenue has increased by 42% in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the second quarter of 2008 due to higher gold sales volumes and prices, costs have increased by 27% due mainly to higher depreciation charges.

TORONTO, July 20 /CNW/ - Gold Participation and Income Fund (the "Fund"), a closed-end investment trust designed to provide investors with Canadian-dollar exposure to the long-term performance of gold bullion and gold equity securities while providing a monthly distribution stream and mitigating downside risk, is pleased to announce the exchange ratios for the Fund's exchange option (the "Exchange Option") with respect to its initial public offering.
Under the Exchange Option, prospective purchasers had the opportunity to exchange Shares of SPDR Gold Trust and freely- tradeable listed securities of issuers in the S&P/TSX Global Gold Index or the S&P/TSX 60 Index (collectively, "Exchange Securities") for Combined Units of the Fund (each Combined Unit consisting of one Unit of the Fund and one Warrant for one Unit).
Under the Exchange Option, the number of Combined Units issuable in exchange for Exchange Securities deposited by prospective purchasers was determined by dividing the weighted average trading price of the Exchange Securities on the Toronto Stock Exchange, The New York Stock Exchange or The NASDAQ Stock Market, as the case may be, during the three consecutive trading days ending on July 17, 2009, as adjusted to reflect dividends declared or distributions pending which will not be received by the Fund (such adjusted trading price being the "Exchange Price") by $12.00 (being the issue price of a Combined Unit).

Ecuador approves law to resume mining activities

QUITO, Ecuador - Ecuador's legislators have approved a bill that would resume mining activities suspended nine months ago and promote large-scale mining projects.
Environmental and Indian organizations immediately denounced the bill approved Monday night and accused the government of selling out to foreign interests.
Legislators approved the bill by a 50-15 vote and President Rafael Correa has 10 days to sign it into law.

Iamgold to Acquire Orezone's Essakane Gold Project

Iamgold Corp. reported in mid-December that it was planning to acquire, through a plan of arrangement, all of the outstanding common shares of Orezone in an all-share transaction valued at approximately $139 million.
"This transaction represents excellent value and takes us a large step toward our stated goal of 1.8 million ounces annual gold production by 2012, while lowering our average cash cost by $40 to $50 per ounce," said Joseph Conway, president and CEO of Toronto, Canada-based Iamgold.
Under the terms of the transaction, Iamgold will acquire and finance development of the Essakane project, one of West Africa's largest undeveloped gold reserves.
