SCANA sets stage for boom: New campus likely to spur surrounding development

Nov. 8--Sub Station II owner Chris Kueny sees more SCANA employees coming to his sandwich shop in Cayce this fall since the utility began moving into its new headquarters nearby.
The influx led him to put up a sign near the complex at 12th Street and I-77 to attract more of its workers to his eatery.
Kueny's experience is an early indication of what city leaders expect will be the economic spin-off, as South Carolina's only Fortune 500 company settles in and plans development around it.

Nov. 6--Dear Action Line: I got an e-mail, apparently from my bank, about "suspicious activity" on my account.
Phishing: This work is abbreviated Internet jargon for "password fishing" -- an attempt by criminals to obtain credit card, bank account, routing and ID numbers so they can steal from you.
APWG: The Anti-Phishing Working Group Web site -- tulsaworld.com/APWG -- says the "number and sophistication of phishing scams reaching consumers continues increasing dramatically."

Oct. 30--North Dakota authorities say they've snared members of a traveling group that heisted checks from businesses around the state and cashed them at banks, stealing a total $50,000 to $75,000.
"This is a new twist on things -- actually burglarizing the business and getting the actual business' checks," Grand Forks detective Mike Flannery said.
The ring -- reportedly made up of men from Mexico and Honduras in the U.S. illegally -- hit Fargo, West Fargo and Grand Forks in September.

Alaska Bank Robber Got What He Wanted, Then Took a Seat in the Lobby

ANCHORAGE, Alaska _ Timmy Lee Porter walked into an Anchorage, Alaska, bank this month and handed a teller a note scribbled on the back of a bank slip.
So was Porter, who had taken a seat on a couch in the bank lobby, apparently waiting to be arrested.
Why Porter held up the bank and then waited to be arrested was unclear.

Critics Hang Up on Update of Telephone Rules

Oct. 24--The person whose job it is to stand up for consumers in utility matters said she sees nothing to like about legislation that would overhaul regulation of Ohio's telephone industry.
"We can't find one provision in this bill that we think is a benefit to consumers," Janine Migden-Ostrander, the Ohio consumers' counsel, told reporters yesterday.
Migden-Ostrander has teamed up with groups including AARP Ohio and the Ohio Poverty Law Center to fight legislation that supporters say will update Ohio regulation to keep up with major changes in the telecom industry.

The scam: Go to an airport, a coffee shop, bookstore and many other public sites and you'll have access to Wi-Fi service.
How it works: According to a recent AARP Bulletin, a hacker can place himself where an unsecure network signal is strongest and, using off-the-shelf equipment, can hijack the host network.
In addition, AARP notes, while he's taking information from you, you may be unknowingly downloading viruses and other malware from him.
