Fourth-Quarter Results Beat Apple Inc. (AAPL) fourth-quarter beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.43 in earnings per share and $9.19 billion in revenue. The Dow Jones Industrial rallied late, moving up 0.60% on the day, making it the only major index up for the day. The NASDAQ was down -0.88% closing at 1715.92, with the S&P also down, falling -0.10% to close at 908.35. In futures news, both gold and crude oil were up settling at $923.90 and $58.85, respectively. The 10-year price rallied today as the Fed purchased bonds, the yield fell to 3.176%. In automotive news, six General Motor (GM: 1.15, -0.29 (-20.14%)) executives took advantage of the trading window and sold 205,000 shares of GM stock. PC Rankings: One Company Firmly In The Top Spot

More rankings, this time for the major PC vendors. The numbers in the following chart are from Gartner and cover U.S. shipments in the first quarter of 2009. Hewlett-Packard for the first time since 2001 has taken the lead, slipping ahead of Dell. Apple, despite its market share slipping from over 9% down to 7.4%, is solidly in fourth place. Apple stock has been doing quite well and is one of the few that is trading above its 200-day moving average so investors are apparently not too concerned about market share numbers. Gartner has this to say: Analysts think that Apple’s relatively higher ASP created challenges for it in the tough economy, but that its deft control of inventories limited its shipment decline. IDC Forecasts Slower PC Growth - How Bad Will It Be?

IDC, a provider of market intelligence for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets, released their forecast for PC shipments. With the economic downturn impacting all kinds of products, IDC expects demand for PCs to slow significantly. The report forecasts continued growth, just growth not as strong as previously expected. "IDC expects worldwide PC shipments to grow just 3.8% in 2009 with shipment value falling by 5.3%. This is considerably slower than second quarter projections of 13.7% growth in units and 4.5% in shipment value. The outlook for full year 2008 and 2010 have each been lowered a couple percent to 12.4% and 10.9%, respectively, with growth above 12% for 2011 and 2012." Silicon Valley Chip Companies May Face Drawn-Out Economic Recovery

Nov. 3--Despite upbeat pronouncements by Intel about its resurgent sales and evidence the economy finally is growing, the prospects for other chip companies and their thousands of Silicon Valley employees remain unsettlingly murky.
But others fear the sales upsurge in chips may be a mirage based on short-term changes in inventories maintained by computer makers, with a full-fledged, consumer-fueled recovery not likely to happen until after 2011 or even past 2013 for some chip sectors.
"The question is demand," said Michael Palma, a semiconductor specialist at the Framingham, Mass., market-research firm IDC.
