Lincoln and Blaine counties hammered by unemployment

Nov. 7--No other community in south-central Idaho has been hit harder by the recession than Shoshone, where the unemployment rate surpassed 14 percent in October.
Blame it on Blaine County, say local and state officials.
That's because one in five people in Shoshone work in the beleaguered tourism, real estate and construction industries in Blaine County.

Nov. 7--The national unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in October, surprising economists who had been predicting a more modest increase from September's 9.8 percent.
The U.S. economy also continued to shed jobs, with 190,000 lost during the month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported yesterday.
With the unemployment rate hitting its highest point since April 1983, records indicate this is now the second recession since World War II in which the nation has faced an unemployment rate of more than 10 percent.

Nov. 7--Tempe Corona del Sol saw another tough, fourth-quarter loss Friday night end its late bid for a playoff berth on the final night of the 2009 regular season.
As a result, the unofficial/projected matchups for next week's 5A-I state playoffs will feature several rematches from the regular season, including Fiesta Region rivals Mesa High and Mesa Red Mountain, Mesa Desert Ridge and Gilbert Mesquite and Mesa Westwood and Phoenix Mountain Pointe.
In 5A-II the team that clung to life was Gilbert Perry, which snatched the 15th playoff spot despite a tough 31-28 loss to Mesa Desert Ridge.

WASHINGTON _ The nation's unemployment rate jumped to an unexpected 10.2 percent in October, throwing 190,000 more Americans out of work, raising questions about whether the budding economic recovery will endure, and confronting President Barack Obama with a politically explosive new challenge.
And many economists predicted it would go higher still in coming months.
Some 15.7 million workers now have no jobs, the government said in releasing its monthly unemployment report, and an estimated 5 million more are working fewer hours and drawing smaller pay checks than they were before the country fell into the worst recession in a generation.

Nov. 6--The skyline of "Gotham City" appeared in stark contrast Thursday to chiseled mountains and desolate valleys that surround this mock Mojave Desert town.
Instead, the heroes were a ground controller named Staff Sgt. James Spreter and pilots in two A-10 Thunderbolt II jets that swooped in with their Gatling guns rumbling to unleash a barrage of cannon fire at imaginary terrorists in trucks on the city's north end.
Since it was built in 2005, this was the first time the range commander had granted a throng of nonmilitary visitors a glimpse of the place where warplanes and ground troops rehearse for missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nov. 6--The sun continues to shine on Bend's PV Powered.
The solar products manufacturer has added 30 employees since June and is fast-tracking an expansion project in order to add more capacity to its plant in the Brinson Business Park in northeast Bend.
The company is now up to 80 employees and hiring more thanks to market demand for its 260-kilowatt inverter that's exceeding sales and industry expectations, said Erick Petersen, the company's vice president of sales and marketing.

Nov. 6--As a member of the Vermont National Guard during World War II, C. Rodney Dow took cover from Japanese bombers and charted zig-zag courses to elude Japanese submarines.
On Wednesday, Dow and Americans everywhere will observe Veterans Day.
More than six decades after he served in the CBI Theater (China-Burma-India), Dow takes great pride in his years in the military.

Nov. 6--Dominion Virginia Power customers would get back more than $400 million from the company under an agreement the state's largest utility has reached with the state attorney general's office and a group of large ratepayers.
If approved by the State Corporation Commission, the proposed settlement of several pending Dominion Virginia Power rate cases would save a typical residential customer -- using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a month -- about $80 next year, the company said.
By agreeing to maintain Dominion Virginia Power's base-rate structure at pre-Sept.

Nov. 5--Memphis-based Innova Fund II, LP has been selected as one of six venture capital firms to participate in the TNInvestco program, state officials announced today.
The initiative is aimed at bolstering entrepreneurial communities and helping create new businesses in the state.
Innova will receive $20 million in gross premiums tax credits, which will be marketed to insurance companies to establish of venture capital funds for investment in early- and mid-stage companies in Tennessee.
