Indexes Do Not Tell The Tale Of Damage

First, pardon all the trading today - some days just require it. I'm already exhausted and its only 2 PM. Second, we've been saying the indexes are not reflecting the carnage seen "underneath" - my watch lists are full of names in the $500M to $5B market cap space which is my sweet spot, and it looks like September 2008 . Markets are showing plenty of volatility today, with the NASDAQ sticking out like a sore thumb (up 0.6% due to MSFT and AMZN earnings), outpacing the S&P 500 and Dow which are down. Affymetrix (NASDAQ:AFFX) is getting lots of commentary followin better-than-expected Q2 results: - Piper Jaffray is upgrading their rating to Overweight from Neutral and raising their target to $11 (prev. $5) Firm notes the upgrade reflects a favorable valuation, improving operational metrics and favorable revenue mix. They note the management is successfully restructuring the company's manufacturing cost base (and now turning their attention to operating expenses), the valuation (currently trading at 1.0x 2010 EV/Rev estimate) and the changing mix of business away from markets where they are less competitive (i.e. GWAS) and shifting resources toward markets that benefit Affy's products (such as pharmacogenomics). Early Week Earnings Watch

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.[More...]

We have several firms out defending Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN) after the co pre-announced 2Q results after the close and expecting revenues to be ~$161 MM, below prior guidance range of $168-173 MM. The miss was largely attributed to weakness in the array business: 1) Slowdown in GWAS as researchers await new content; 2) Softness in Foundation funding; & 3) Order delays (sequencers) as researchers are uncertain about grant money. - Deutsche Bank reiterates Buy noting ST volatility does not reflect any change in fundamentals, which remain strong. ILMN est. that $10-15 MM of rev was impacted by delays in 1H’09, with some volatility expected in 3Q as well; however, stimulus benefit should make for a strong 4Q’09 (sequencing). After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. Stocks got slammed in extremely light trading Thursday following the employment report, which revealed more weakness for job trends ahead of the long July 4 holiday weekend.
Action Economics said the report was weaker than expected due to a drop in the workweek to a new low of 33.0 hours from 33.1 over the last three months, and an associated big 0.8% drop in the hours-worked index.
Action Economics said it has revised down its second quarter GDP estimate to a decline of 2.5% from a drop of 2.0%.
