This is a shot of our tool shed, a long way from Norm Abram. May 16--The sausage and eggs were ready and the 110 or so employees of Collierville's Public Services Department were set to romp after breakfast Friday morning at their annual equipment rodeo.
Then hail began tapping on the roof, more than 13/4 inches of rain poured down and gusting winds are believed to have been responsible for flinging a 12-foot long, 2-inch by 6-inch plank as well as tree debris on to the department's parking lot on Keough Road.

Apr. 4--Mark Smith had a front-row seat to the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" construction this week.
Smith had just learned he and his neighbors would be Indianapolis' first community to get a wide installation of wireless Internet access.
Residents in about 450 homes in 3.5 square miles of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood will have the service, said Dave Strang, information technology director for Estridge Homes, the new home's builder.

A thin wall cuts down the center of the space, dividing it into two long, rectangular rooms.
One programmer, Jon Bona, a graduate student in the University at Buffalo's computer science and engineering program, is preparing a small legion of robots to do battle with each other while local musician Dave Kane sets up his multitiered keyboards.

Panasonic to Slash Investment in TV Panel Plants By 135 Bil. Yen

Jan. 9--OSAKA -- Panasonic Corp. said Friday it plans to slash investment in plants under construction in Hyogo Prefecture for manufacturing panels for flat-screen televisions by 135 billion yen as the global economic downturn has eroded demand.
The Osaka-based Japanese electronics maker originally planned to spend a total of 580 billion yen on the plants in the cities of Amagasaki and Himeji, western Japan.
Despite the investment cut, Panasonic aims to boost sales of flat-screen TVs by 50 percent from the previous year to 15.5 million units in fiscal 2009 starting April by putting emphasis on emerging markets among other measures.

Refineries Entering Digital Age With Help From IPS

Dec. 13--When you think of power plants and refineries, chances are you picture big metal valves and knobs and dials with needles that workers in overalls are always trying to keep out of the red.
Plano-based IPS, which was assembled in 2001 as a subsidiary of British firm Invensys PLC, in many ways resembles the other technology outsourcing companies based in the Dallas area.
Paulett Eberhart, president and chief executive at IPS, was previously a top executive at Plano-based Electronic Data Systems Corp., the big outsourcing firm bought by Hewlett-Packard Co. earlier this year.
