Nokia (NOK) Moves To Linux

Yesterday,Nokia Corp. (NOK)?introduced its first high-end 3G smart-phone N900 based on Linux open source software. This converged mobile device provides a personal computer-like experience to users and will run on the Linux-based Maeme 5 software.

This 3G handset will have a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and incorporate a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It will be available in select markets from October for 500 Euros.

Traditionally, all Nokia handsets have used the Symbian operating system, which is now fully controlled by Nokia. However, the Symbian system has lost charm for mobile phone users and become outdated compared to open source operating systems like Linux, Google Inc.’s (GOOG)[More...]

IBM's Footprint Strong In India

IBM's (IBM) broad product and services portfolio delivers value to clients through a combination of services, hardware and software. The key verticals for IBM in the Indian market are infrastructure, such as construction and steel; telecom; industrial; energy and utilities. It also witnesses growth in the insurance and banking, travel and transportation, and the government spaces. We therefore favor IBM for its wide range of products and large international exposure. IBM generates over a billion dollars in revenue from the Indian market. Revenue at IBM was driven by double-digit growth in markets such as India and China, which were up 10.0% in 2008. IBM expects these growing markets to drive revenue and increase growth beyond 2009. In comparison to the slowing U.S. markets and weak IT spending, the Indian market is still relatively healthy[More...]

Amazon.com (AMZN) is well known as one of the top e-commerce sites on the web, but over the last few years it has been adding a new component to its business model. Amazon has become a software as a service (SaaS) provider for enterprise clients through its on-demand cloud computing solution. SaaS is a rapidly growing and developing segment of technology, which follows a very different model than that of traditional perpetual license software sales. SaaS is still a nebulous and evolving concept, but in its most basic terms, SaaS is an on-demand delivery model that utilizes the internet to provide access to existing applications from anywhere with a web connection. Amazon.com provides its Web Services portal and in[More...]

Tech Industry Layoffs Quietly Begin

2009 MGI RESEARCH, LLC January 9, 2009 Recent checks of our networks indicate that the belt-tightening at technology vendors has begun. As we communicated to clients in Q4, the headcount reductions being discussed among tech sector CFOs was in the 10-20% range. Marketing budgets appear to be under the greatest pressure, but even sales forces are being culled. Some of the cuts appear to be pre-emptive, while others strike us as indications that management teams are planning public announcements of 2009 cost containment measures during their Q4 earnings calls. We look forward to updating the MGI benchmarks of companies as they report their Q4 numbers. <span style="font-weight:[More...]

How Bad Will 2009 Be For The Semiconductor Industry?

So how bad will it be? iSuppli says let me count the ways. Dale Ford, senior vice president for iSuppli is quoted as follows: "The semiconductor industry's growth cycle is shaped by six primary, interrelated forces—global economic health, electronic equipment production, chip supply/demand balance, capital investment, industry and individual company profitability and competition... All six of these areas will present challenges for the semiconductor industry in 2009."Let's take a look at a few of these. Global Economic Health -- The recession that began in the U.S. has become a global phenomena. This is impacting both consumer electronics and enterprise equipment suppliers. With declines in OEM factory revenues projected, semiconductors will feel the knock-on effect. iSuppli expects the result for[More...]

Global Med Technologies (OTC: GLOB) is trading well below its intrinsic valuation, according to at least one activist hedge fund. Victory Park Capital principal Richard Levy insisted in a letter to the board that if the equity markets do not reflect the value of the company then it is incumbent upon the board to take action to realize that value for shareholders. As a result, Victory Park recommended one of two options: Publicly auction the company for sale to a strategic or financial buyer. Pursue a buyout transaction led by Victory Capital. Victory Capital announced that they are prepared to purchase all of the company’s outstanding equity securities that it does not already own for $1.10 per share in cash,[More...]

Since the stock is thinly traded with an average volume of less than 2,000 shares per day, the seller is looking to negotiate a block trade on his own and the ask price is generous at a 69% discount of the closing price today.
I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to emerging trends in tech. One of my favorite stories right now revolves around the smartphone market and the battle for mobile operating system dominance. The companies in this space are extremely experienced and know how to capitalize on an amazing opportunity when it presents itself. Within the last few years we have seen new companies entering the mobile space. Apple(AAPL), Google(GOOG), RIM(RIMM) and Microsoft(MSFT) are all looking to bite a chunk out of the new exploding mobile market. Even Garmin(GRMN) wants in with it’s new nuvifone. While these giant companies have already pushed out once dominant Palm(PALM) and Motorola(MOT) one company still dominates the mobile world, Nokia.I recently dug through AdMob’s smartphone statistics for August and was amazed to see the dominant position Nokia has in the global smartphone market. It is obvious that instead of trying to compete[More...]

Consumers' Rules of Engagement in Online Information Exchanges

The exponential growth of the online marketplace and the enhanced capability of online companies to collect, store, transfer, and analyze consumer data have raised concerns about online privacy (FTC 2000).

Yet some evidence indicates that large numbers of consumers deliberately falsify information in Web site exchanges (Fox 2005).

Thus, it becomes vitally important to understand how consumers perceive and respond to such requests, particularly how they counterbalance the firms' desire for information with their own desire for privacy in the relationship (Carroll 2002; Charters 2002).
