Get yourself a man-made island... About $60 billion in debt is in danger of default by Dubai World, a state-owned conglomerate in the Middle East. This is the company making those surreal palm-shaped island resorts for the world's mega-rich. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which figuratively mints money with black gold. (Ed.: One would wonder how an area so enriched by gross oil revenues could ever be over-extended on credit.) Jan. 11--IN A NORMAL YEAR, it might not make sense to pick blue chip stocks like Apple, Microsoft, or General Electric as a strategy to win The Blade's 2009 Stock Market Contest.
After all, blue chips are usually mature and don't have a lot of growth potential, said Andrew Weiner, a financial adviser at the Toledo office of Smith Barney, one of the co-sponsors of the contest that began Jan. 1.
But with the stock markets losing nearly 40 percent of their value last year and blue chips getting beaten down, blue chips might not be a bad play this year, Mr. Weiner said.

Citigroup analyst Keith Horowitz says the government's capital injection plan is a game changer, with the Treasury Dept. moving to address greater issues facing banks - capital, liquidity in form of depositor protection, ability to issue debt.
He views Bank of America (BAC) as the greatest gainer from capital injection plan among large-caps; he considers BB&T (BBT) as the best positioned among mid-caps.
