JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is having a terrific morning on Thursday as it has gained nearly 11%. When a stock breaks out like this, we always look for a catalyst for the move and in this case the primary reason seems to us to be an endorsement from Jim Cramer. Closing Update: Wall Street Recovers From Jobs Report Downer, Ends Higher Friday and Up 3% for Week

Stock averages end narrowly higher Friday after a whipsaw session. All three leading averages record solid 3% weekly gains. A jump for Dow component General Electric (GE) after an analyst upgrade helped offset the damage from a weaker-than-expected October jobs report. Watching The Dollar, And Charts For Tuesday

During the second half of the trading day today, we saw the dollar rallying, with equities giving back early gains and closing flat. Although we should consider last week's stock market action bullish, with a nice recovery from early-week distribution, a couple of factors give reason for caution. First, the Chinese market showed some serious weakness last week. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 5.8% last Monday, followed by a 4.2% drop on Wednesday. Following the Wednesday selloff in China, the US markets gapped down at the open, and then charged higher to close solidly positive for the day. The US markets continued to follow-through during the remainder of the week. Wednesday's action was intriguing, in that it was allegedly due to a report showing surprisingly low oil inventories, which traders took as an indicator of improved demand, recovery, etc. Personally I think it is just as likely that Geithner told Goldman Sachs to buy the open to put a floor under[More...]

Earlier this month, Oclaro, Inc (OCLR) held a conference call to discuss its business going forward. Oclaro was formed by a merger of Bookham and Avanex in end-April. Ah Nortel (NT) - those of you who were around in the late 90s know this name well.... JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Nortel (NT) - the dominant powers of the next decade! Oh yeh, Lucent too ... For those not familiar with that era JDSU used to be the Potash of it's day... or Google in fact. Nortel was the back up name in the sector. In a completely anecdotal story, I was looking through my watch lists to expunge some old names this weekend (i.e. Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns) and I happened upon Nortel. I expunged her as well... Finisar posts sharply higher fiscal 1Q profit

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Finisar Corp., a maker of fiber-optic subsystems and other data networking equipment, said Thursday its fiscal first-quarter profit rose sharply, helped by an acquisition and stronger sales.
That compares with $2.8 million, or a penny per share, during the three months that ended Aug. 3, 2008.
Revenue increased 11 percent to $128.7 million from $115.8 million in the year-earlier period, including an 11 percent rise in revenue from the company's optics business - an increase that reflects the company's acquisition of rival Optium last year.
