Infrastructure Stocks About To Rise?

EURUSD ST– The volatile consolidation continues.Clear signs of tiredness, but won’t actively look for a broader downside correction until (if) 55-dma at 1.4767 breaks on a close basis.

USD Index– Same respect of 55-dma, particularly with the USD –ve seasonals. A close above the 55-dma needed to call for a broader turn, stands at 76.15, if achieved would be serious.

Gold– Consolidates against the highs. Broader position squaring may cause it to correct but should be very much a buy on the dip.[More...]

Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. (NYSE: JEC): Stock of the Day by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Usually when we think of infrastructure, visions of bridges, tunnels, buildings, industrial plants, come to mind. When talk turns to energy we think of oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear power. Yet the two are inexorably linked together: you need good infrastructure to move energy around, and you can’t create the infrastructure without good sources of cheap energy. As the world continues – albeit ever so slowly – to wean itself off fossil fuels in favor of greener sources of energy, the two are increasingly talked about[More...]

The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. I expect good things but the stock action has been weak"ish" and this is the more expensive of the two - not that[More...]

Although the industrial sector had a rough year in 2008, there were some sectors, like conglomerates, rails, and aerospace and defense sub-sectors, that were able to help boost some of the lagging sub-sectors that relied heavily on residential construction and business spending. The net effect was an out performance in the first three quarters of the year. In Q4 2008 and the beginning of 2009, we’ve seen the performance of the Industrials ETF, the XLI (XLI: 21.11, -0.01 (-0.05%)), significantly underperform the S&P 500 as the more attractive sub-sectors in 2008 began to plummet based on economic factors such as the expected 2010 defense report for the defense sector, and lower volumes for the railroad[More...]

Small-Cap Water Infrastructure Plays for the Stimulus Package

One of the major themes of 2009 to this point has been investor speculation on global infrastructure. With the recent $787 U.S. stimulus package signed into law by President Barack Obama, analysts are at a crossroads in looking where to invest to get the best exposure to bailout money. But where exactly is the money going to be? After digging into the stimulus, it seems to me that all signs are pointing to the road and water infrastructure as leading areas of the package. If you want the “pure play” on this plan, one needs to look beyond the larger companies and focus on the[More...]

Coverage Ratio - What Stocks Can We Uncover In The S&P 500?

Credit markets are still fairly frozen and making it difficult for companies to issue new debt. With earnings estimates seemingly in free fall, I thought it might be interesting to run a screen that identifies those companies who are expected to be well positioned to avoid problems related to carrying their current total debt load. This screen is based on the Cash Flow to Debt Coverage Ratio. This compares a company's operating cash flow to its total debt, which, for purposes of this ratio, is defined as the sum of short-term borrowings, the current portion of long-term debt and long-term debt. This ratio provides an indication of a company's ability to cover total debt with its yearly cash flow from operations. The higher the percentage ratio, the better the company's ability to carry its total debt. In our screen, we looked for companies whose debt coverage ratio is 0.75 or[More...]
