The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. It appears a lot of traders are switching to the short side quickly, so we may get a short squeeze soon. However, I will be adding short into strength. I added some short exposure in the REIT sector today, and will be looking for opportunities to short the financial sector as well, although I am still a bit nervous in the latter case. Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever. VCLK is currently trading at a P/E multiple of 13.5x our 2008 earnings per share estimate of $0.71, a discount to the industry median. Although over the long-term we are very positive on online advertising growth, current economic conditions are creating significant headwinds for ValueClick and others in the industry. Rising energy prices and falling housing prices have caused consumer confidence to drop, and consumer spending has fallen as a result. Don't Get Comfortable

The Fed has no market sense. Their strike was preemptive, and futile at best.If it were me, I would have let the market die a slow death for a few hours. I would have enjoyed my lunch while trading was halted at the NASDAQ and NYSE. Then nonchalantly, via text messages with my committee, make the decision to lower interest rates. While in my mind knowing that this action was not a permanent answer, I would have provided some temporary relief after allowing the market to digest all unhealthy matters in one bone crushing trading session.
