More Soggy Economic Data But Stocks Dont Care

Having briefly scanned the dataflow Friday before checking out the price action, your writer had thought he may be confronted with somewhat softer markets. Wrong. Rather, a combination of slightly weaker than expected GDP growth in Europe and a wider trade deficit and decline in consumer confidence in the US seems to have been trumped by a decent earnings report from Walt Disney and upped Christmas guidance from JC Penney. Indeed, in the US consumer cyclicals led the way with a 1.5% gain, versus a 0.6% gain for the S&P 500. Commodity markets were mixed.[More...]

Retailers Moving To More Stable Ground

One of the biggest question marks surrounding the sustainability of the economic recovery is the strength of the American consumer. Buyers were understandably shell-shocked by the recession, as tumbling home prices, increased insecurity, higher unemployment, and tighter credit kept wallets slammed shut. Given this environment, it is hardly surprising that consumer spending plummeted, and retailers were scrambling to move unsold inventories by offering huge promotions.[More...]

Cisco (CSCO) reported strong results last night, and also raised guidance going forward. The company gets 35% of its men’s apparel sales, which in total comprise 53% of its revenues, from compression and while Under Amour’s done a lot to broaden athletes’ use of compression, it’s now seeing a lot of competition from other players like Nike and Champion… At Deckers the five largest customers accounted for 30% of worldwide sales in 2008. Under Amour’s banking on two customers — Dick’s and Sports Authority. 31% of their net revenues in which means that Under Amour’s has much less control over its own destiny…Plus Uggs have continued to gain market share at Nordstroms. Just ask yourself this question, who would you rather have selling your products?
