Zignals Stock Charts: Three Gold Miners

Gold bugs have seen a steady improvement in the commodity pricing with the recent price cross of its 50-day MA and the subsequent cross of this moving average by the 20-day MA. However, the best form has emerged from some of the gold mining stocks. Here are three worth watching; two of which have YourCall information. The first to emerge from a 9-month cup-and-handle pattern is Gold Fields Ltd (GFI). The break beyond $12.63 hasn't cleared all trouble given reaction lows from early 2008 at $14.00 will continue to act as supply. The potential 1-year target is last October's highs at $18.22. I have a YourCall for a push to $18.19 with a stop at $11.69. <a[More...]

Industry Outlook: Metals & Mining Sector

Overview - Neutral OPPORTUNITIES The overall metals industry structure is rather concentrated, with a few producers making a high proportion of sales. There is higher consumption of metals in the Asia-Pacific region, especially China and India. This is due to per capita consumption rising towards U.S./European levels, which could theoretically double metals demand in these regions in the longer-term. There are vastly improved balance sheets with solid liquidity, which is starting to create some merger and acquisition activity, as it is cheaper to buy assets than mine for them. Production cuts of up to 35% are occurring to keep operating rates in the low-80s and keep the market balanced. As of now, this has not had significant positive impact, but it may have kept the market from[More...]

The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. While the market was flattish last week, I[More...]

Market Report For Friday: Apr 17, 2009

(7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. On average, analysts had expected earnings per share of $4.93 and revenue of $4.08 billion, according to Yahoo Finance.

TORONTO, July 20 /CNW/ - Gold Participation and Income Fund (the "Fund"), a closed-end investment trust designed to provide investors with Canadian-dollar exposure to the long-term performance of gold bullion and gold equity securities while providing a monthly distribution stream and mitigating downside risk, is pleased to announce the exchange ratios for the Fund's exchange option (the "Exchange Option") with respect to its initial public offering.

Under the Exchange Option, prospective purchasers had the opportunity to exchange Shares of SPDR Gold Trust and freely- tradeable listed securities of issuers in the S&P/TSX Global Gold Index or the S&P/TSX 60 Index (collectively, "Exchange Securities") for Combined Units of the Fund (each Combined Unit consisting of one Unit of the Fund and one Warrant for one Unit).

Under the Exchange Option, the number of Combined Units issuable in exchange for Exchange Securities deposited by prospective purchasers was determined by dividing the weighted average trading price of the Exchange Securities on the Toronto Stock Exchange, The New York Stock Exchange or The NASDAQ Stock Market, as the case may be, during the three consecutive trading days ending on July 17, 2009, as adjusted to reflect dividends declared or distributions pending which will not be received by the Fund (such adjusted trading price being the "Exchange Price") by $12.00 (being the issue price of a Combined Unit).
