After the market close yesterday, the operator of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC fast food chains?- Yum! Brands, Inc. (YUM)?- reported second-quarter results.? Earnings per share, excluding special charges, grew 10% year over year to $0.50, surpassing our estimate of $0.45 and street estimate of $0.43.? On a?reported basis, EPS jumped 40% to $0.63.? Total revenue, however, tumbled 6.9% to $2,476 million.? Total sales dropped 7.4%, whereas franchise and license fees and income fell 3.6%. ? Rick Newman with U.S. News and World Reports put together an interesting piece about 15 companies that may not survive 2009 because these firms all carry large amounts of debt with very little cash on their books. These 15 firms all have been labeled with "very high" credit risks by Moody's. 15 Companies that Might Not Survive 2009

I wanted to call your attention to an article in US News and World Reports by Rick Newman that lists 15 Companies that Might Not Survive 2009. To me, it’s a scary list because many of the companies are not obscure, “never heard of them” names, but commonplace businesses, some of which have national reach. For example, I’ve visited a Six Flags (SIX) theme park almost every year growing up. It’s stock now trades at $0.33 and made the list. Rite-Aid (RAD) Pharmacies seem to be in most cities, but the economy has taken their share price down to $0.30 as well. Newman suggests that Blockbuster (BBI), a large video store retailer, might not survive thanks to Netflix and Video-on-Demand services offered through most cable providers. [More...]
