Elliott Street Project Goes Forward

Jun. 24--Right-of-way acquisitions are under way in the South Elliott Street project.
Mayes County Commissioners encumbered $200,000 for the right-of-way and utility estimates in their Monday meeting.
Darrell Yoder, District 2 Commissioner, said right-of-way acquisitions will cost less than $100,000.

Feb. 26--Aiming to strengthen business ties between Germany and Chattanooga, a group from Volkswagen's home state toured the automaker's planned plant site today.
Over a dozen business people and elected officials from the German state of Lower Saxony met with Chattanooga economic developers and others to talk about opportunities for future link-ups.
Stephan Kapferer, secretary of state for Lower Saxony, said Volkswagen's opening of a new plant in the United States is not a threat to his state.

Dec. 30--PEORIA -- After several years of riding the smooth waves of prosperity provided by Caterpillar Inc., the area got hit twice in the last six months by news of tidal wave proportions.
While there is no question that economic news dominated central Illinois as it did the nation in 2008, it really was topsy-turvy year with good news mixing with bad.
He said the area is experiencing "a dialing back" right now as Caterpillar, the health care sector and others put some things off until the economy improves.

Tamogami Views No Secret: Sacked ASDF Chief Had Long History of Airing of Revisionist Opinions

Nov. 20--Unsworn testimony before an Upper House committee last week shed light on axed Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Gen. Toshio Tamogami's nationalist views, but questions persist over how such a vocal revisionist was appointed ASDF chief to begin with.
Born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1948, Tamogami graduated from the National Defense Academy of Japan in 1971.
He served as chief of the Air Defense Command as well as the head of its equipment division before being appointed ASDF chief of staff in March 2007.
