Ex-items for accounting purposes once you work through that come up with a comparable number, $0.44 a share versus an estimated $0.18, revenue better than expected, $2.08 billion given in large part by the cash for clunkers program.
We've been watching Carmax (KMX) as a potential position for a good 4-5 months now but unfortunately never pulled the trigger; these are impressive results especially considering Cash for Clunkers pulled away a good portion of potential buyers for about 5 weeks. (Carmax is mostly a used car dealer although there are some new cars in the mix) Second impressive quarter in a row. 36 cents of earnings even without the 10 cent one time charge.[More...]

Prospecting AutoNation (AN)

Aside from valuation (19x forward) which apparently is no longer a valid reason to either not buy a stock or to sell one, I like the story of AutoNation (AN). Less competition is always a good thing - at least from a corporate standpoint. (Oct 1, 2008: Reuters - 1 in 5 Auto Dealers Could go Under by 2009) And if we do the "compartively it's cheap game" I suppose compared to some stocks being bought day after day on 50, 70, 90x FORWARD estimates it's cheap. But that game was popular in late 90s NASDAQ and it meant nothing other than we are happy to overpay for 1 stock relative to overpaying even more of another. The quandry here is what sort of multiple could this expand to? Are we willing to pay 28x for a car dealer? I guess since investors are willing to pay anything on most stocks nowadays,[More...]

I have a few interesting emails the past week that, combined with what I've been writing, made me think about the direction of the country. When you take a few steps back from the day to day, it really is amazing how involved government now has their hands in almost everything. I used to snicker (pre 2007) by all those who preached America is about "free market capitalism" and now I think anyone who speaks like this has simply reverted to some idealistic text book world. He/she looks at what America with an asterisk (or perhaps longs for some long forgotten era)... i.e. well if you just don't count these 87,000 programs we're full on free market capitalism. As we wrote in this post, even the champions of US Industry understand there is very little free market[More...]
