Nov. 30--While consumers may be ambivalent about the direction of the economy, for bankers, the issue is clear -- credit risks have definitely fallen and signs of improvement are clear.
Among the state-owned banks, the biggest lenders to lower- and middle-income rural and urban consumers, executives say the fact that loan demand continues to rise even as non-performing loans fall is a clear sign of economic recovery.
Leaders of three state banks -- the Government Savings Bank, the Government Housing Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives -- all agree that credit conditions have improved considerably in recent months.

Apple's iPhone arrives in tech-savvy South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea - Tech-savvy South Koreans began getting their coveted iPhones on Saturday amid fanfare and expectations they will shake up a local market dominated by domestic giants Samsung and LG.
Hundreds of iPhone fans lined up to get the phones at an official launch event in Seoul, some waiting overnight.
South Korean mobile carrier KT Corp., Apple Inc.'s local partner, said up to 1,000 people would receive iPhones at the event.

South Koreans to get Apple's iPhone this week

SEOUL, South Korea - Apple Inc's iPhone is coming to South Korea this week, a local carrier announced Sunday, bringing the iconic communications device to one of the world's most sophisticated mobile phone markets.
KT Corp. began accepting orders for the iPhone both online and in stores Sunday and service will start Nov. 28 as part of an official launch, said Alice Park, a spokeswoman for the country's second-largest mobile carrier.
The announcement ends a long wait in South Korea, which has lagged behind other countries in Asia in introducing the sleek smartphone that has grabbed headlines around the world and solidified Apple's status as a purveyor of cutting-edge consumer electronics.

South Korean regulator approves iPhone

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea's telecommunications regulator cleared the way Wednesday for the launch of Apple's iPhone, amid reports the hit device could reach consumers by the end of this month.
The Korea Communications Commission gave its approval at a meeting of its commissioners and the phone can be launched anytime, said spokesman Lee Sang-hun.
Local service providers KT Corp. and SK Telecom Co. have been in talks with Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. regarding the introduction of the smartphone.

KTC Sees Personal Loan Approvals Rising

Oct. 16--Krungthai Card Plc (KTC), the country's largest card issuer, expects its approval rate of personal loans might return to its normal 35 percent of applications in the fourth quarter with an improving economy and its tighter lending criteria.
Sudaporn Janwatanagool, executive vice-president for the personal loan business, said approvals had dropped to 15 percent-20 percent in the second quarter this year from 30-35 percent in normal economic times.
The rate improved in the third quarter to 25 percent on signs of economic recovery.

Oct. 6--Financial institutions are once again promoting unsecured loans on the back of the improving economy and higher consumer spending.
Krung Thai Card Plc has resumed activities in the personal loan market after reducing its business in the sector for a year mainly due to higher risks posed by the recession, said senior executive vice-president Thawatchai Thitisakdiskul.
Bank of Thailand regulations cap the maximum charge at 28 percent per year.

Shareholders Block KTC Rights Issue

May 1--Shareholders of the consumer finance firm Krungthai Card rejected a proposal to raise 7.73 billion baht in new capital.
KTC president Niwatt Chittalarn said 31 percent of shareholders attending yesterday's shareholders' meeting rejected the rights issue, which was over the 25 percent threshhold set under the law.
The subscription price was set at 10 baht per share.

KTC to Raise B7.7bn to Reduce Debt Ratio, Improve Creditors' Confidence

Mar. 20--Krungthai Card Plc (KTC) plans to raise 7.74 billion baht in new funds to pay debts in order to reduce its debt to equity ratio and establish confidence among creditors, says the company's president and CEO, Niwatt Chittalarn.
The KTC board of directors approved a management plan to reducing registered capital from 2.58 billion baht to 2.57 billion baht yesterday by cancelling its existing registered unsold shares.
Mr Niwatt said that if shareholders subscribed to all the new shares, the company's debt-to-equity ratio would decline to 2.5 times from 7.4 times currently.

Intelsat Reports Third Quarter 2009 Results

Intelsat, Ltd., the world's leading provider of fixed satellite services, today reported results for the three months and nine monthsi ended September 30, 2009.
The company also reported Intelsat, Ltd. EBITDAii, or earnings before net interest, loss on early extinguishment of debt, taxes and depreciation and amortization, of $439.8 million, and New Bermuda Adjusted EBITDAii of $490.9 million, or 79 percent of revenue, for the three months ended September 30, 2009.
Intelsat, Ltd. reported revenue of $1.9 billion and a net loss of $684.7 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2009.
