4 Earnings Season Option Strategies For Monday November 9

In my latest three blog posts, I listed some stocks which I would be willing to go long by selling the puts right before the stock reported earnings. Keep in mind these are companies which I believed would have a positive reaction to the earnings, however if the stock moved sideways on the number this strategy would still likely return a gain the following day.[More...]

Why We've Waited To Buy Natural Gas

A lot of people have written asking why The Kelly Letter hasn't bought natural gas via UNG yet. The following June 21 article sent to subscribers, re-displayed here in its entirety, explains why. The addendum at the bottom shows what's happened since we ran the article. Original June 21 Article sent to Kelly Letter subscribers We've spent a lot of time looking at oil this year, and have put money on both the long and short side of the fluctuating price. We're currently betting on lower prices ahead, and I still think we'll get them in the short term. A related commodity that we've discussed much less is natural gas. In some ways, it's a better place to invest than the oil market. Let's look at those ways. Natural gas is primarily a U.S. domestic commodity, much less exposed to the[More...]

Interpreting Yesterday's Rally

So I am sitting there, and the market's down around 4%. The S&P had breached the October lows, and I'm loaded with short positions, including a pretty large position in the ultrashort EEV. Then it suddenly occurs to me, everybody's watching this level, including the government. And they have hundred of billions of dollars to buy stocks! I started thinking, if I'm Hank Paulson, I'd be buying hand over fist now to protect the low, maybe put a floor under this market. So I covered a bunch of positions, although unfortunately too few, and what had been a magnificently profitable day turned into something quite mundane. That was some gut-wrenching, exhausting action. So call me a tin-hat conspiracy guy, but I think we would still be dropping if it weren't for the plunge-protection team. All the same, I will respect the rally, since it is exactly what I was looking for in order to move to a bullish orientation. I do not think we have seen the end of the bear[More...]

Historic Day Bouncers

“Historic day” definitely refers to the global coordinated interest rate cut by the U.S., England, Europe, and China- the four most influential economies of our day. I was joking on my Twitter feed how exciting it was that China joined the “Allied Forces.” Yeah, the rate cuts probably took the world a step back from the cliff of a worldwide deep recession, but the positive benefits of the cuts, if any, probably won’t be felt for months and months. What mattered more for me today, and probably for those who monitor their investment accounts closely, it was just good to have a day where we weren’t in freefall.[More...]

Nov. 13--Quicksilver Resources' drilling program in the natural gas-rich Barnett Shale in North Texas "is really going well," propelling the company's rising production, CEO Glenn Darden told investment analysts in a conference call this week.

But he wasn't nearly so effusive when an analyst asked him about the company's "other Barnett" field.

Fort Worth-based Quicksilver, an independent natural gas producer, has extensive lease holdings of 375,000 net acres in the Delaware Basin in Culberson, Jeff Davis and Reeves counties in far West Texas, where the company's chief exploration target is none other than the Barnett Shale.
