Renewable Energy Brings Modern-Day Gold Rush

GOLDEN, Colo. _ Dreams of renewable energy riches have set off a scramble not seen since miners rushed into these surrounding hills in search of shiny nuggets.
"This is like a land rush with a whole bunch of people running side by side," said David Christensen, one of the gurus of new electricity technology at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the Colorado foothills.
Although states such as Colorado, Minnesota and Iowa may have an early edge as renewable energy leaders, Kansas and Missouri have projects, expertise and other assets that could make them strong contenders.

Dec. 22--BAHRAIN MAY HOST FOOD SAFETY LAB: At a meeting of Gulf port food officials, it was discussed that Bahrain may soon host a regional laboratory aimed at improving food safety across the Gulf.
The meeting reviewed allocating different ports in the Gulf for specific food tests across the region.
Health Ministry' food hygiene head Abdulla Baqer said the food lab in Bahrain is ideal for microbiological tests on meat, chicken and fish.

LaBranche & Co Inc. (NYSE: LAB) (the “Company”) today reported financial results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2009. The Company reported after-tax net income of $13.3 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, for the 2009 second quarter, which includes a pre-tax unrealized gain on the Company's shares of NYSE Euronext, Inc. common stock (the "NYX shares") of $29.3 million and income on early extinguishment of debt of $1.0 million. This compares to a net loss of $21.3 million, or $0.34 per share, for the 2008 second quarter, which included a $33.2 million pre-tax unrealized loss on the Company's NYX shares and expense on early extinguishment of debt of $5.1 million.[More...]

The Company reported an after-tax net loss of $29.7 million, or $0.51 per share, for the 2009 first quarter, which includes a pre-tax unrealized loss on the Company's shares of NYSE Euronext, Inc. common stock (the "NYX shares") of $29.7 million.
