Earnings Review Of Note Monday-Tuesday

Some names I am looking at early this week Monday Fund holdings - Baidu.com (BIDU) and First National Financial (FNF). The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. I expect good things but the stock action has been weak"ish" and this is the more expensive of the two - not that[More...]

Doug Kass' 20 Suprises for 2009

As promised, presented at TheStreet.com are Doug Kass' 20 Surprises for 2009; Doug is a hedge fund manager who I have been following for a long time and who excels in non Kool Aid analysis. Probably because his main hedge fund has had a short bias all these years, hence you tend to be more cynical when you need to fight drunk bulls every day. As Doug says, Wall Street is dominated by group think and herd behavior. While standing in front of the herd is dangerous, one can find some profitable opportunities from thinking outside the box. These are his predictions from last year (Jan 2: Doug Kass 20 Predictions for 2008)<span class="blsp-spelling-error"[More...]

A Few Sunday Thoughts: Common Sense, Disruption and Hope

Mark-to-Market Accounting Likely to Remain Had the SEC repudiated mark-to-market accounting, it could have set the recovery of our financial sector back a generation. From today's Wall Street Journal story: Mark-to-market accounting requires companies to value financial assets at their fair value -- the price they can fetch in the market. That has led companies to take big write-downs on thinly traded securities, even if the underlying assets aren't severely troubled. The write-downs have put pressure on prices of financial firms' stocks and forced many of them to sell assets or raise money to stay well above the capital requirements that have been set by regulators. <p[More...]

Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.<br[More...]

Nov. 24--(Dow Jones)--As rivals weigh whether to top Kraft Food Inc.'s GBP9.9 billion ($16.5 billion) offer for Cadbury PLC, they are confronting an unusual situation: Kraft has extracted exclusivity agreements from the banks it is using to finance its bid, leaving contenders with few other banks to choose from.

Northfield-based Kraft, which made a hostile offer for Cadbury on Nov. 9, is being advised by Lazard and has secured a GBP5.5 billion bridge loan from a group of nine banks lead by Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bank AG and HSBC Holdings PLC and including BNP Paribas SA, Barclays Capital, Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC as well as Credit Suisse, Societe Generale SA and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA.

The lead banks have cast the net even further and the number of banks financing Kraft's bid could grow to 18, a person familiar with the matter said earlier this month.

Oct. 6--NORWALK -- An early morning outage in South Norwalk cut power to the downtown business district and shut down elevators at the rail station garage, leaving some stores without power until late afternoon, officials said.

The outage did not displace rush hour parkers who could use the 720-space rail station garage, which continued to run on an emergency generator, said Kathryn Hebert, administrative service manager for the Department of Public Works for Norwalk.

Hebert said the outage at the garage was one of several this year due to equipment breakdown by South Norwalk Electric and Water, and is a concern because the company has no automated system to immediately notify them when a power failure occurs overnight.
