Ladish (LDSH) reported 4th quarter results which, at first glance, seemed pretty good for an aerospace supplier, given the current turbulent environment: Sales were up by 3.9% to almost $112.6 million and EPS were down by only 6.3% to $0.60. But a second glance revealed some interesting things. Interest & Other was a positive $558 thousand -- compared to a negative $386 thousand last year -- because of a transaction between the corporate office and the company's Polish subsidiary. Income Taxes were a positive $2.8 million versus a negative $4.0 million because of the lingering effects of the reinstatement of R&D tax credits in the third quarter. Airbus' 2008 Report Card

Airbus recently released information on how it did during 2008. Its net orders totaled 777 shipsets, consisting of 472 of the A318 through A321 series, 301 of the A330/A340/A350 cluster and 9 A380s, offset by cancellation of 5 A310s. Its deliveries totaled 483 shipsets, consisting of 386 of the A318 through A321 series, 85 of the A330/A340 cluster and 12 A380s. Its backlog at the end of 2008 was 3,715 shipsets, consisting of 2,598 of the A318 through A321 series, 932 of the A330/A340/A350 cluster and 185 A380s. If Airbus was to continue delivering aircraft at the same rate it did in 2008 (i.e., 483 shipsets), it would take almost 7.7 years to work through the current backlog. Precision Castparts Corp. (PCP) released Q3-09 results Tuesday. Total Q3-09 sales were $1,614.7 million, down 3.2% from Q3-08 sales of $1,668.2 million. Q3-09 sales in the Investment Cast Products and Forged Products segments were significantly impacted by the lengthy Boeing strike, with a lesser impact to the Fastener Products segment. While Boeing (BA) aircraft production rates are resuming, PCP does not expect recovery to pre-strike levels in its fiscal '09 fourth quarter.
