New Home Sales Rise!

In a very positive sign for the economy, new home sales rose by 6.2% in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 430,000. This far exceeded consensus expectations for an annual new home sales rate of just 404,000. While new home sales are just a small fraction of total homes sales -- on Monday, it was reported that Existing Homes Sales were at an annual rate of 6.1 million -- new home sales pack a much bigger punch for the economy.[More...]

Second, we've been saying the indexes are not reflecting the carnage seen "underneath" - my watch lists are full of names in the $500M to $5B market cap space which is my sweet spot, and it looks like September 2008 . Here is a sampling of what is really happening when you move away from McDonalds, IBM, Walmart, and Microsoft.[More...]

Homebuilders Gain On Hopes Of Extension To Tax Benefit

Homebuilder stocks are among the biggest price gainers in the market on Thursday, as there are reports that Congress is considering an extension of the first time home buyers tax credit. At this point, the $8,000 tax credit is set to expire at the end of November, but unless home buyers are already under contract on a home, most future buyers will miss out on the credit. Estimates suggest that as many as one-third of home buyers in recent months have taken advantage of this program. Obviously, there are concerns that demand will drop off when this tax credit expires, much like the demand fell off for cars in the aftermath of Cash for Clunkers (Cash for Clunkers Saps Demand).[More...]

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted unanimously to keep the fed funds target rate between 0% and 1/4%.

Bank of America (BAC)

In upgrading Bank of America stock and adding it to the firm's "Americas Conviction Buy List," Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Ramsden gave two reasons for his upgrade: the bank's operating profits should help offset rising loan losses, and potential dilution to current stockholders is likely to be less than expected.

In a May 18 research note, Ramsden said Bank of America is likely in the middle of raising $8.5 billion in new capital through the issuance of common stock, selling portions of the shares each day until it hits its targeted capital goal.

As first-quarter earnings, the stress tests, the equity sales, and the other recent concerns of the banking industry grow smaller in the market's rearview mirror, it turns out that Wall Street analysts are starting to take a shine to the battered sector.

On May 18, the S&P Investment Banking & Brokerage index was up nearly 4%, and the S&P Other Diversified Financial Services index gained 5% after analysts raised their ratings or price targets on various industry players.

Another long-suffering group, homebuilders, also gained on May 18, with the S&P industry index rising 6% on a better-than-expected report from Lennar (LEN) and a surprising jump in the National Association of Home Builders' survey index for May.

Jan. 17--What had been a popular playground for polo players in the 1920s and a Christmas-themed amusement park in the 1970s could soon become a new residential neighborhood near Carbonero Creek on the north end of Scotts Valley.

Lennar Communities, one of the nation's largest home developers, is looking to build 40 single-family homes on 13 acres of the 113-acre parcel known as the Polo Ranch -- one of the last large open spaces left in the city.

Lennar bought the Polo Ranch property from software company Borland in 1998 and tossed around various housing development proposals over the years, though the site has been dormant for the past decade and Lennar didn't seek permits from the city until now.
