Indexes Do Not Tell The Tale Of Damage

First, pardon all the trading today - some days just require it. I'm already exhausted and its only 2 PM. Second, we've been saying the indexes are not reflecting the carnage seen "underneath" - my watch lists are full of names in the $500M to $5B market cap space which is my sweet spot, and it looks like September 2008 . Homebuilders Gain On Hopes Of Extension To Tax Benefit

Homebuilder stocks are among the biggest price gainers in the market on Thursday, as there are reports that Congress is considering an extension of the first time home buyers tax credit. At this point, the $8,000 tax credit is set to expire at the end of November, but unless home buyers are already under contract on a home, most future buyers will miss out on the credit. Estimates suggest that as many as one-third of home buyers in recent months have taken advantage of this program. Obviously, there are concerns that demand will drop off when this tax credit expires, much like the demand fell off for cars in the aftermath of Cash for Clunkers (Cash for Clunkers Saps Demand).[More...]

New data released in the S&P/Case-Shiller home-price index today (Tuesday) show prices of U.S. houses rose for the third straight month in July, suggesting the housing slump that led to the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression is stabilizing.[More...]

Rates Unchanged Before Tough Decisions

Today's Fed decision was no surprise, but questions abound about the timing of Bernanke's next move. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted unanimously to keep the fed funds target rate between 0% and 1/4%. The wording of the statement reflected a slightly more upbeat assessment of the economy, with the observation that "economic activity has picked up." The July Credit Suisse First Boston Monthly Survey Of Real Estate Agents was made available today fir institutional clients and consultants on the survey. Presented monthly, this 60-page (or thereabouts) publication has been an extremely accurate and predictive document - my first choice when I begin pondering my monthly real estate strategy. Almost always, I focus on the top fifty metro markets and regions, primarily interested in the pure statistics and opinions of "boots on the ground" agents and investors that make this such an excellent read. Another feature of this monthly survey lists agents recommendations for national builders. The percentage number is based upon positive less negative responses from agents. Zephyrhills Kills Fire Sprinkler Ordinance

Jul. 30--ZEPHYRHILLS -- The city council on Monday repealed a fire sprinkler ordinance that members said drove business away from Zephyrhills.
Florida statutes require sprinklers for buildings of more than 12,000 square feet.
The fire marshal stopped enforcing the law after it was challenged by homebuilder Lennar.
