New Home Sales Rise!

In a very positive sign for the economy, new home sales rose by 6.2% in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 430,000. This far exceeded consensus expectations for an annual new home sales rate of just 404,000. While new home sales are just a small fraction of total homes sales -- on Monday, it was reported that Existing Homes Sales were at an annual rate of 6.1 million -- new home sales pack a much bigger punch for the economy.[More...]

Indexes Do Not Tell The Tale Of Damage

First, pardon all the trading today - some days just require it. I'm already exhausted and its only 2 PM. Second, we've been saying the indexes are not reflecting the carnage seen "underneath" - my watch lists are full of names in the $500M to $5B market cap space which is my sweet spot, and it looks like September 2008 . Homebuilders Gain On Hopes Of Extension To Tax Benefit

Homebuilder stocks are among the biggest price gainers in the market on Thursday, as there are reports that Congress is considering an extension of the first time home buyers tax credit. At this point, the $8,000 tax credit is set to expire at the end of November, but unless home buyers are already under contract on a home, most future buyers will miss out on the credit. Estimates suggest that as many as one-third of home buyers in recent months have taken advantage of this program. Obviously, there are concerns that demand will drop off when this tax credit expires, much like the demand fell off for cars in the aftermath of Cash for Clunkers (Cash for Clunkers Saps Demand).[More...]

Rates Unchanged Before Tough Decisions

Today's Fed decision was no surprise, but questions abound about the timing of Bernanke's next move. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted unanimously to keep the fed funds target rate between 0% and 1/4%. The wording of the statement reflected a slightly more upbeat assessment of the economy, with the observation that "economic activity has picked up." Nov. 20--Upland-based Lewis Operating Corp. and PCCP, LLC of El Segundo have announced the $6.6 million acquisition of 798 finished and partially finished residential lots located in southeast Reno, Nevada.
Lewis, one of the nation's largest privately held real estate development companies, has 40 years of homebuilding and land development experience in the Reno market.
The lots were sold at a bankruptcy auction held by LandSource, a joint venture between home builder Lennar Corp, LNR Property Corp, and MW Housing, which is principally owned by the California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS).
