Market Closing : Late Move Slightly Trims Broad Stock Gains - Commodities Continue Surge

Stocks end higher but in the lower end of the day's range, clocking between a 0.6% and 0.75% advance.

Stocks gained broadly after retailers posted solid September sales, surprising many analysts. Alcoa kicked off earnings season with an unexpected profit and the Labor Department reported a drop in weekly jobless claims. In addition, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England left rates unchanged at record lows, which lent stocks worldwide some support.[More...]

Weekly Credit Summary: August 28

Credit underperformed equities this week as single-name tighteners edged wideners by four-to-three leaving indices (especially HY) underperforming intrinsics in general. CONSumer and ENRG names underperformed as TMT and FINLs were best with INDUstrials mixed. Financials outperformed non-financials but the strength in the former was more at the tails of the distribution while the weakness in the latter was more broad-based.[More...]

Seven Notable Dividend Increases In The News

The markets remained nervous last week as several companies such as State Street, Macy’s and Motorola cut or eliminated their dividend payments. Of those three, seasoned dividend investors should only be concerned with State Street’s dividend cut. During economic downturns it is normal for cyclical industries to cut or eliminate their dividends. Companies with strong competitive advantages, as well as solid consumer brands should keep and even increase their dividends. The companies whose dividend cuts are concerning are the ones which have raised them for more than 10 or 25 years, which represent the so called <a[More...]

L-3 Demonstrates Strength - Analyst Blog

L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (LLL) delivered strong operating results and robust cash flow in fiscal 2008 wherein the company delivered growth across its business segments despite divestitures, higher pension funding, and declining Linguist revenues. Looking forward, along with a healthy backlog position, an ongoing repurchase program, and a favorable industry outlook, earnings growth will come through both organic and accretive acquisitions. Accordingly, we reiterate our BUY recommendation on LLL common stock with a 6-month target price of $86.00. Price appreciation to our near-term valuation target, combined with $0.30 per share quarterly dividend which we deem to be sustainable and secure based upon low projected earnings payouts represents annualized[More...]

Stocks Resume Selloff As Distribution Day Rattles Investors Who Bought Last Weeks LAME Rally

Do people not pay attention to volume at all? I am starting to begin they don’t after listening to all the typical talking loud-mouths this weekend. They all clamored and were happy the indexes were up 15% to 20% last week. Yet not a single person anywhere mentioned that volume was lower and lower each day as the rally went along. They also did not mention that we were right near/at the 50 day moving averages which are in a downtrend on all the indexes. Leaving these two key facts out made anything they said irrelevant. There was always a possibility of waking up and seeing a market running away today but the truth is this market is predictable yet insanely impossible to trade unless you are a daytrader. After my initial short positions before the selloff really started, things have been harder to manage as shorts are not going down in a smooth line like they should in a bear market. This is making for a very difficult trading environment and why unless[More...]

Ready, Aim, Fire! Defense Sector is Loaded

Take what you’ve heard about the effects of a Barack Obama U.S. Presidency… and throw it away. The defense contractors are in the best spot that I have seen them in years, yet still-cautious investors are making all the wrong moves. The recent turmoil in the sector has led to some unbelievable valuations in the face of a global arms race, a continued surge in national security spending and regional conflicts that should continue to form opportunities for all of the major defense names. Looking at a Year-to-Date comparison between the S&P 500 Index and the SPADE Defense Index yields a difference of about 6%, in favor of the S&P. Why? Investors have historically flocked to the defense names because of their steady and[More...]

The End Of The Trading Range - Market Analysis

Stocks are probably going to fall further over the foreseeable future. Yesterday's new multi-year low caused the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) to fall out of its approximate 6-week trading range. Would-be buyers were forced to the sidelines because of recessionary signals, uncertainty about the automakers and a complete lack of visibility. Options expiration probably did not help, but I would not list this as a primary culprit. Some of the causalities of the current environment are not surprising. Prior to the credit crunch, Citigroup (C) was criticized for being too big and bloated. Now, the CEO appears unwilling to tell employees how things really are, and possibly in deep[More...]

Stocks Continue The Selloff With Volume Finally Picking Up On The Selling

Today can be called nothing other than nasty as most of the indexes made round trips back to either six-year or eleven-year lows, following a nasty selloff that came on very heavy volume. Volume picked up on every exchange as finally some signs of panic selling hit the market. This selling took the markets off around 5% to 6% and a lot of stocks were just walloped.
