Stocks end higher but in the lower end of the day's range, clocking between a 0.6% and 0.75% advance. Stocks gained broadly after retailers posted solid September sales, surprising many analysts. Alcoa kicked off earnings season with an unexpected profit and the Labor Department reported a drop in weekly jobless claims. Credit underperformed equities this week as single-name tighteners edged wideners by four-to-three leaving indices (especially HY) underperforming intrinsics in general. CONSumer and ENRG names underperformed as TMT and FINLs were best with INDUstrials mixed. Financials outperformed non-financials but the strength in the former was more at the tails of the distribution while the weakness in the latter was more broad-based.[More...]

Do people not pay attention to volume at all? I am starting to begin they don’t after listening to all the typical talking loud-mouths this weekend. They all clamored and were happy the indexes were up 15% to 20% last week. Yet not a single person anywhere mentioned that volume was lower and lower each day as the rally went along. They also did not mention that we were right near/at the 50 day moving averages which are in a downtrend on all the indexes. Leaving these two key facts out made anything they said irrelevant. There was always a possibility of waking up and seeing a market running away today but the truth is this market is predictable yet insanely impossible to trade unless you are a daytrader. Stocks are probably going to fall further over the foreseeable future. Yesterday's new multi-year low caused the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) to fall out of its approximate 6-week trading range. Nov. 3--Ukrop's Super Markets Inc. has made changes to its successful fuelperks!
program, making customers cash in rewards sooner and setting the bar higher for attaining them.
Customers now have to spend $50 or more on a single transaction in order to earn a 5-cents-per-gallon discount, the company said yesterday on its Web site.
