Did Bill Miller or Legg Mason bribe Barron's for a recent cover story? Or has Barron's assumed investors cannot understand elementary math? Given Miller's atrocious performance in recent years followed by positive 2009 performance that still has investors that committed capital to Value Trust in 2007 down considerably, one must wonder how Miller could obtain the Barron's cover story on October 12th entitled "It's Miller Time."[More...]

Eaton Vance (EV) Matches Expectations

Asset manager Eaton Vance Corp.’s (EV) reported fiscal third-quarter net income of $31.2 million, a decline of 37% year-over-year as performance was affected by sluggish fee income amid weak fund inflows. Excluding a charge associated with an IPO, earnings per share came in at 28 cents, matching the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company stated that quarterly revenue slumped 19% year over year to $228.4 million as investment advisory and administration fees declined 17% to $175.2 million. Distribution and service fees also fell 31% and 26% to $21.7 million and $29.9 million respectively. The slump in fees was caused by a decline in assets under management (AUM) to $143.7 billion, compared to $155.8 billion in the year-ago quarter as clients adopted a cautious approach towards closed-end funds. BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) Earnings Top Wall Street Estimates

BlackRock Inc. (NYSE:BLK), the largest publicly-traded U.S. asset manager, on Tuesday beat the Street for the second quarter with an adjusted-profit of $1.75 per share, or $239 million. Net income, as adjusted, was 117% higher than first quarter 2009 and 16% lower than second quarter 2008. The investment management firm said second-quarter profit dropped on a year-over-year basis as assets under management declined, but results improved from the first-quarter as equity and fixed income markets recovered. “I am of the belief that markets are stabilizing and we are seeing that in client activity worldwide”- commented Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of BlackRock. The New York-based firm reported a profit of $218 mln, or $1.59 per share, down $56 mln from the year ago period ’s net income of $2 per share. Treasury OKs another firm for toxic asset program

WASHINGTON - Investment company RLJ Western Asset Management LP has raised enough money to join with the government in buying toxic assets held by banks, the Treasury Department said Thursday.
The purchases of the soured mortgage securities and other assets in the government's Public-Private Investment Program, or PPIP, are aimed at enabling banks to resume more robust lending to support an economic recovery.
Treasury said that RLJ Western Asset Management raised more than the $500 million minimum needed to close investment funds under the program.
