Welcome back from the weekend! As the rest of the market returns from the holiday break, we should see more volume and volatility creep back into stocks. Only tomorrow will tell as to whether or not this is a positive or a negative for stock prices. At the moment, futures prices are trading slightly lower. The Dow is off by 44 points, the S&P down 5 points, and the Nasdaq is down 7 points. Crude oil is up another buck, trading at $47.30. As we talk technicals, take a look at a 5 day chart of the mini S&P futures contract. <img src="http://www.tradingaddicts.com/storage/ES0105.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1231126533104" alt=""[More...]

A few weeks ago, that market value had fallen to $7 billion, and today it stands at $12.7 billion. I'm getting a bout of vertigo just typing these numbers.
Auto Zone : Downgraded To Underperform, $110 Tgt At FBR

Friedman Billings Ramsey is out with a major downgrade on Auto Zone (NYSE:AZO) taking their rating to Underperform from Mkt Perform while lowering tgt to $110. At a minimum, the firm does not think that AZO's stock price will be able to keep up with its peers, nor with the overall equity market. As with other retailers, sales have likely slowed for the sector since the end of AutoZone's fiscal year (August, 2008). When AZO had last reported, comp store sales were +0.6% and had been helped for that period by the tax stimulus. At Gabelli's after-market automotive conference yesterday in Las Vegas, the firm found most companies generally cautious about current sales trends. Therefore, they estimate that AZO's same-store sales are currently tracking at -2% for 1Q09E. <br[More...]

Apple Surging On Talk Of Share Buyback

Some interesting comments on the blog of late debating the merits of buying stocks with dividends versus not. I don't have a problem buying stocks without dividends since many stocks I focus on are relatively young and in high growth states. In markets like this they are punished since the growth is questioned; but if they have "must have" products or in highly defensible niches that fear is usually very overblown. The other issue is many companies don't like to issue dividends even if they can (see Microsoft for a long time) because it means they've turned from a growth stock to a value stock. So more important than actually spitting off dividends is the ABILITY to spit off dividends (i.e. high cash on balance sheet and positive cash flow). Stock buybacks have interestingly mean almost nothing in this horrid market - usually this has <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"[More...]

We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we've been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We've also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, watch for a retest to go short or get some Put Options. It retested and broke down again last week, hope you caught some of the action. What about the week ahead? The major trend is still to the downside and watch for resistance at 1270 for the S&P 500 index. Also watch the Financials (XLF), Homebuilders (XHB), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Energy (XLE)[More...]
