I had a break this morning and was poking around some of my favourite blogs to see what was what and caught Barry Ritholz's post Celebrating Incompetent Insider Stock Buys over at his excellent blog The Big Picture. I had just posted on my blog regarding insider buying in the banks and Barry had done similar. Insider Buying ?

I had to laugh yesterday at the 'breaking news' regarding Bank America that got the CNBC anchors all lathered up. The news that the bank CEO Ken Lewis and some other yes puppet executives went out and purchased just north of 500,000 shares in the $6 neighbourhood which amounts to the staggering dollar amount of $3 million. Now if this is not the biggest show of confidence I know not what is. Lets just call this what it is, token buying and be done with it. I will not that one Dylan Ratigan was not impressed with the purchase of stock nor the rally yesterday. Readers know I heaped praise upon Mr. Ratigan for "finally getting it" recently. It really is amazing how you really do not need an advanced degree to figure out you are getting swindled and have been used as a pawn in the big fraud. Best Performing Stock of 2008

I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. A Look At The O&G Sector

In early morning trading, US stock futures are up on news of a government rescue package for Citibank. As I mentioned in last night's sector overview, sector charts are looking bearish here. A continuation of Friday's rally will provide some improved entries for short trades. As a side note, I recommend checking out the blogger sentiment polls at Ticker Sense. The figures going back to week of 10/23 are available on the lead page. Trading The Next Leg Down

Now that we have broken down out of the consolidation zone in each of the major indexes, it is highly likely that we have a significant downward move ahead. Given recent volatility, we could see a headfake rally virtually anywhere. However, we have broken through lows that were tested on multiple occasions, and are in a clear downtrend, both long- and near-term. We have lower to go in the immediate future. In this volatile market, I am having more success trading options than equities. This is a personal style thing, and relates to my relatively tight stops on equity trades. I tend to accumulate a much larger number of small options positions gradually over time. Because they are small, I do not get anxious when they go they wander in the wrong direction, whereas I get very anxious when my equity trades do not work immediately. The first chart of MANT is the daily timeframe. The main take away here is the failed triangle pattern which resulted in a fast move lower. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, she worked at ChoicePoint and EDS.
