The extremely strong opening delivered by the Transformers movie sequel could bode well for Hasbro's (HAS) sales in the coming months. The film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, racked up domestic ticket sales of more than $200 million in the 5 days since its opening on Wednesday. This financial performance exceeded expectations, and narrowly missed setting the record for 5-day revenues set last year by the Batman sequel, The Dark Knight. The financial strength of the movie could indicate better-than-expected sales for Hasbro going forward. The company owns the Transformers brand, and toys tied to the movie are a major component of the company's operations going forward. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Both companies are privately held. FAO Schwarz was bought out of bankruptcy by a private equity firm in 2004, and Toys "R" Us was purchased for $6.6 billion in 2005 by an investment group led by private equity firms. FAO Schwarz operates only two retail stores -- its flagship location in New York City, and a location at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The acquisition also includes the company's e-commerce and catalog operations, and gives Toys "R" Us control of an iconic brand name in the toy industry.

NEW YORK - Mattel Inc., the largest U.S. toymaker, said Friday its fiscal third-quarter profit declined 3 percent as the tough economy dampened demand for key brands like Barbie and Fisher-Price.

Chief Executive Robert A.
Fitch: 2010 Should be a Turning Point for U.S. Consumer Products Sector

For 2010, Fitch Ratings expects U.S. consumer products companies to see modestly rising demand as global economies revive.

Overall free cash flow (cash from operations less capital expenditures and dividends) should improve in 2009 despite global economic weakness, allowing most companies considerable latitude to meet internal capital needs and debt service in 2010.

Fitch says large acquisitions did not play a meaningful part in top-line growth for the sector in 2009 nor are they projected to do so in 2010 except for The Stanley Works (SWK) merger agreement with Black & Decker (BDK).
