This weekend we ran the Alert HQ process and generated the list of Trend Leaders. These stocks and ETFs are distinguished by strong recent performance. Using daily data, we look for stocks that are over their 50-day moving average. We then use three different technical indicators to determine trend: Aroon, DMI and MACD. All three indicators must be registering strong readings in order for a stock or ETF to make the list of Trend Leaders. Below we present those stocks from the Tech sector that made this week's list. Sellers appear to be gaining the upper hand, as selling gained momentum in the second half of US trading yesterday, and Asian markets sold off overnight. While it is a bit premature to call the end of the rally, given yesterday's volume, a few factors indicate that we may resume our downtrend soon: - Momentum appears to be shifting. Goldman Sachs is out with a interesting downgrade to Sell on Microchip Tech (NASDAQ:MCHP) noting their checks indicate the market is starting to shift away from its core strengths, leading them to reevaluate the story. Firm says they have done extensive field work on the microcontroller market, prompted in part by Microchip’s proposal on October 2, 2008, to acquire Atmel’s MCU business. They have conducted more than a dozen meetings and calls with industry participants and contacts. They also spent two full days at the Embedded Systems conference in Boston on October 27-28, meeting with dozens of companies in the MCU ecosystem to garner insight into the state of the market. The slowdown in Microchip’s core growth and impact from increasing competition in MCUs is at the center of the downgrade to Sell from Neutral as well as a reduction in estimates and price target.[More...]

Microchip Tech Guides Lower - Analyst Blog

Microchip Technology Inc. (MCHP) reported in-line September results and guided revenue significantly lower for the December quarter. Revenue and GAAP EPS were $269.7 million and $0.41, respectively. MCHP remains one of the more resilient stocks in semis following its announcement that it will maintain strong dividends in spite of a weak economy and pursue an aggressive initiative to preserve cash. Microchip guided December quarter revenues to decline 8-16% sequentially. Due to broad based weakness in demand, orders decelerated in October and resulted in a significant decline in Q3 backlog. Last week we saw further market volatility as major indexes continued extending their losses for October, which could turn out to be the worst month for the markets since 1938. There was an announcement from S&P which decreased the expected dividend growth for 2008 to 1.20% and also provided a cautionary outlook for dividends and earnings in 2009. Despite all the doom and gloom there were several notable dividend increases over the past week. Microchip Technology (MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced an increase in the dividend to 33.9 cents per share. Atmel Corporation (ATML) is expected to release its Q3:FY08 results on Oct. 29. Earlier, the company reported Q2:FY08 revenues of $420.9 million, up 4.1% y/y and up 2.4% q/q. Microcontrollers posted record revenues of $143 million and the ASIC segment posted revenues of $121 million.Recently, Microchip, Inc. Oct. 18--The economic recession is altering Arizona's economy in ways that could become permanent, according to leading economy watchers.
In the future, the state might have to rely less on population growth as an economic engine, consumer spending might not be as big a part of the economy and a higher value is likely to be placed on new ideas, they say.
Technology will be more important than ever as all Arizona industries -- whether they be old standbys like mining or agriculture or high-fliers like aerospace -- will need innovations to compete, said Nancy Welch, associate director of the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University and co-author of a new report on lessons from Arizona's economic history.
